The early Japanese stuff was considered a bit go a joke too, but by the 70s & 80s they had the market.
It took the Koreans less time to achieve the same.
Now look at the Chinese. Early Great Walls were horrible, but I know some guys who bought Havals & LDVs in the last year & they've noticed a huge improvement
