It is the GX (base model) and has the simple one zone A/C.
However my MC wagon is terrible. On very hot days it is lucky to cool to a reasonable level. I have had them re-gas it but still sub-standard. I just don't think the A/C unit is up to our Aussie conditions.

Yep - no doubt Toyota probably over engineered their AC in view of the fact the vehicle was likely to be used in some extreme climates.
The Mondeo AC was probably only designed (and built to a budget) to operate in European extremes ie where a hot day is one that cracks into the 30's. Add on the extra cabin space & glass of the wagon & it's likely the AC system just isn't up to the task..
