Default Now, that's how to build a freeway... !!

Although many may be familiar with this elevated freeway in France,
I thought I would post up some pics of this impressive structure.

No need to go down or up hills .... Just build straight across !

It's called the Viaduc de Millau.

If anybody else has some great pics of freeways, bridges and the like, post em up !!

If you think about this.... it actually preserves the trees/wildlife underneath quite well... the only spots where clearing and demolition of natural habitat would be at the footings/posts of the bridge...

and it is incredible to see...

just hope it never falls down!!!

There was a Doco on SBS a while back hosted by Richard Hammond about this bridge and how they built it, very impressive to say the least!

Has also been on Top Gear where they just drove there from the UK in some supercars ... just for the hell of it.

Impressive indeed ... was built to stay above the cloud/fog level when weather is not the best as well.

theres a doco series on foxtel called build it bigger and that was one of the ones they did on there

the way it was built was amazing

in the end the pylons were built by 2or 3 different crews and they had a comp about who was going to finish first and how close to the gps coord that they could get all teams finished about the same time and within mm

i'll see if i can find the build in you tube ( most the good ones end up on you tube )
and post it here

Never happen here, servicing the speed cameras would require a rigger's ricket and then would reduce the profit.

Yep, Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections. You Tube is your friend!!!
Pretty funny when Hammond attempts to go down to a platform under the bridge and freaks out halfway down and has to come back up!

What would it be like driving over that during a 7.5 earthquake?

I find this more impressive, longest suspension bridge. Akashi Kaikyo in Japan.
Interestingly, after the towers were built, an earthquake occured and shifted them a further meter apart, so the bridge had to be redesigned.
Theres a good 'Modern Marvels' documentary on it thats worth watching.
The towers on this bridge is actually taller than that French one, when you count how deep they go into the water.

400 million euro, so 800million AUD...

In Aus that would cost 3-4 billions with the rates our construction workers charge. Hell they say a new stadium in WA for 60,000 people will cost 1.2 billion!!
