I reckon this sort of this is really the tip of the iceberg.

As more and more of our everyday use items link to satelites etc, etc, this will become far more common.

I reckon it won't be much longer before citylink and other such companies sell the data they gather (if not already) and also I reckon authorities will be pushing for satelite tracking on all vehicles.

Most GPS's have a 'take me Home' feature where you save your home location. I did not set this for my house since I am not stupid. I just set it to a random house in my suburb.

What happens when the other manufacturers sell the info to others?

The iPhone was recently given a please xplain in the USA because it was gathering data about the user of the phone as well as tracking their movements.

The issue is your privacy..... not buying the product doesnt solve it.
It only solves the issue for you personally. There is a wider issue about the general publics privacy.

As I said before, the iPhone has been caught out doing the same thing.
Are YOU going to cancel your mobile phone once every single phone manufacturer tracks your move and then sells the info to others?

Do you honestly believe the wider public will stop using these devices if they are being tracked and have their information sold?

And as for using GPS i dont rely on it where i live or any other town that i am familier with an usually rely on the good old phone book map when i got somewhere im not familier with. I do own one but only use it once in a blue moon on long trips. (Three times in 2 yrs so far).

It'll be incorrect anyway. I don't know about other peoples Tom Toms, but the speed limits displayed on my Tom Tom GPS don't even match the posted speed limits on the road signs in some places.

Alot of the time my GPS will say the speed limit is 50, when it's 60 according to road signs and 100 when it's really 110.

The map data displayed on the Tom Tom isnt the issue.... its the fact they collect your movement data and then on sell it.

The "Authorities" will eventually have a system where alll cars are tracked and if you speed they know, expect fine in the post just a matter of time right now people are guinea pigs for the technology to be advanced and developed with the guinea pigs money.

When the trendoids are queing up to have the new phone chip inserted in their heads, the 'planners' will be deploying a new system to break into your thought processes with a sequence should you speed - 1) 'slow down please' 2) 'SLOW DOWN' 3) 'you have been fined and your funds deducted' 4) a stabbing pain, with an uncontrollable urge to pull over and wait for the tow truck, or maybe you'll just drive straight to the re-education camp (at a sensible pace of course).

I use my Nokia N97 as a GPS if i'm in the Celica (little bit old to have a nice sat nav system like the G6E...), and when I was down near Brisbane, it "surprised me" twice. Once was saying "Warning...safety camera ahead", and that had me puzzled...what the hell is a "safety camera?", thought I. Then i saw a fixed speed camera.

The other instance was when I was in an area I wasn't really familiar with, and suddenly it said I was exceeding the speed limit. I'd been watching the speed limits carefully, as I said I didn't know the area, and I knew damn well I was within the limit for that section of road.

So it isn't just Tom Toms...

The information about cameras on GPSs are only updated when you go online to get your map updates. This is why the speed warnings are sometimes way out of date and incorrect.
Even when you get an update online its usually months old.

The information regarding tracking you is only available to them if you plug it into your computer....

I can see where the data could be useful - through this section, average car speed is xxx, which could help improve ETA calculations.
But, as mentioned, this data could easily be used for other purposes... and it certainly is not anonymous - as the location of the start of the journey would be a good pointer to 'home'

Tom-Tom say users could 'opt out' at any time... maybe this should be an opt-in option instead.

Bloody hell........Now they tell us..............

The USA spent 10 years and hundreds of Billions of dollars trying to track down Osama Bin Laden......

All they had to do was covertly sell him a TOM TOM GPS for $50.00 and they would have known exactly where he was............and even slapped him with a couple of speeding fines on his way to Pakistan !!!!!!!!!!!

I really do wonder about the correct applications for all this technology sometimes.
