Seings Ford aren't making Fairlanes any more, it doesn't surprise me.

Our Deputy Red Head has a 300C. And we have a "Buy Australian" mentality. I don't imagine you guys have the same mentality.

Buy Australian? Um why would we? From any particular country I mean..

Any car bought is from another land for us.

No offense intended of course

Well i dont know what it is like in victoria but in Qld there are plenty of kiwi's working in our factories, so you would be supporting your fellow countrymen and women by buying Aussie.

Well there's enough Kiwis over here, so if you buy Australian, then you're likely to give your fellow Kiwis work

Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons called the BMWs unnecessarily big "gas guzzlers". She could work just as hard as other MPS while driving a 1300cc car which used less than five litres of fuel for every 100km travelled.
Someone give her a scooter to get to and from Parliament and see how long she stays green for.

I also love how they are trying to make out as if THEY are ditching the Fairlane for the BMW for fuel issues and not because Ford wont be supplying them anymore.

I love seeing on the news, Kevin Rudd talking about how to act on climate change and what not. Then jumps into his thumping 6.0lt V8 Holden Statesman...

There are a few reasons why its a V8, namely the fact it's put on another 1,500kg in armour. . . .

Yeah they got two or three of the cars done from memory. Its also the very same reason that Howard was using a VS Caprice until 99/00 when they finally upgraded to the newer series.

You can see the thickness of the door glass in some news footage here and there.

They have also added what I would imagine to be an armoured escort territory to the "motorcade" - similiar lines of thought to Gordon Brown's motorcade in the UK - XJ Jag and Range Rover escort.

Motormag or wheels had a writeup on the cars a while ago, the idea is that the limo would attract the most attention in a hijack situation, so it's fairly well armoured. The escort 4wd behind starts providing covering firepower, moving towards the limo. The limo by now would probably be inoperable so the VIP would be transferred to the 4wd - which will probably barge its way out.

Thats not his personal car, he has a Ford Territory Ghia himself.

The government fleet will all be changed over accordingly when they run out of time to much greener cars, they days of the V8 Caprice / LTD are over.

We are getting 300C Diesels up here in QLDs Government Fleet replacing the Current WM 6.0L V8 Caprices when they run out of time.

Truely they should be driving Hybrids..

Australia doesn't get the diesel 7 Series. BMW Australia said " no demand for diesel above the 5 Series"

They don't sell them in NZ either. They're bringing them in especially.

"Ms Fitzsimons said the BMW's eight litres of fuel for 100km broke the Government's Energy Efficiency Conservation Strategy, which called for diesel vehicles to use only 6.5 litres."

Well the Fairy is now discontinued..

Although on the 6pm News (TV3) they said the Government gets them for $90,000 NZD - I'm guessing BM don't want to make a profit on them, rather a marketing exercise.

An no, NZ Pollies don't have a buy NZ made policy when it comes to cars, (would proove difficult). But this christmas they are pushing the Buy NZ made agenda in a big way, and rightfuly so.

Nah, its got nothing to do with BMW not wanting to make profit. It would have more to do with the fact that the Government doesn't pay tax to itself.

In the big scheme of things it's stuff all $$ but I'm suprised there aren't more comments here like "my hard earned tax dollars" or that rarely used phrase "taxpayers money!"

All the talk about better resale and that must be rubbish though. Whats the second hand demand for $170,000 Diesel BMW's in NZ. The market will be absolutely flooded.

In 12 months they will be worth roughly a little more than what they paid for them (if it's $90k - I missed the news) based on current trends.

Good marketing excercise IMO because there are bugger all diesel 7 series here, if any

I've got a feeling the NZ goverment may have picked the BMW 7-Series at the wrong time as there is an all new 7-Series about to be launched next year.

Personally I think they should have gone for the Jaguar XJ.

Or the XF. Cheaper too.

I think it's weird that we're going to be seeing them get carted round in premium cars, the 'Lanes were nice but they were a bit 'meh' if you know what I mean.

The Greens co leader has proved once again that they live in a fantasy idealistic world. They all need a bullet to the head.
I love it how she claims shes drives a 1300cc, yet she doesn't say what it is. It is a mid 1980s Mitsubishi Mirage hatch - very eco friendly, altho I'm sure the latest supercharged V8 Range Rover V8 is cleaner for the environment.
