Default Has anyone ported the AU i6 heads?

What might one expect, re: power / torque, idle, fuel economy, etc?

Any one done it to a VCT?

Thanks.

Andrew.

Hey I like RDA rotors. LOL!

Was it trackwork he was doing, or some rather spirited street driving? LOL!

he had picked it up and was the 2nd drive after getting it (they put a bolt under his accelerator so he couldnt rev it too hard to let it run in etc

was doing 60kmh.. slowed down for a slow down point and it just locked up and he lost it off the road after his rim shattered due to the piece of rotor flying off and hitting it etc

i ported my head in combination with a crow S3 cam, i had excellent results, a tad lump on idle, yet very manageable, with exhaust and intake ran 14.9 easily.

agreed when i breifly spoke to him he seemed to know his stuff, i had an xr6HP head ported but i reckon the guy has done a dodgy and ported only the initial inlet/exhaust and not followed through all the way through to the valve as i have been told you are supposed to replace the the valves or it sits too far up or something, havent really followed up much research but it wouldnt surprise me if he did as he really stung me for labour!

I ported my head.I took my time. 12 months around about. My die grinder blew up so I used a drill. My garage still has alloy flakes around the place. I did alot of research before I did the heads. On the dyno at my mates at Croydon Racing the wagon only ever managed 141rwkws several times pre head work.. After the head went back on I got 170.1 rwkws. This equates to around 21% increase in power.I dont know how it affected economy because I installed a bigger cam at the time. I have since tuned it a bit further my self and get 450 km to the tank and have this monster cam idling at 680rpm. Not too shabby dare I say sdo myself.

Its been a while now.I remember eventually burning the drill out too.heheh.
Just a bit of port work mate.If you get an au head it is very obvious how bad the casting is.I just cleaned them up.
I have to say though that I had seen a few au port jobs on the forum done by proffessionals that lost around 15 rwkws and another which stayed the same power. No one had posted their actual gains before.

If Sox reads this thread then maybe he can offer his advice. He has experience with engine work.

I have a little _2:
Like Stav said, it's about cleaning up the castings, getting rid of sharp edges, opening up restricted sections, etc.
Port matching to the inlet and exhaust manifolds also helps flow.
Machining around the guide boss.
And cutting the valves at certain angles, what's known as a '3 angle valve job'.
I would also skim the face of the head to increase C/R a little.

It's really just about increasing port speed and volume.

The chambers should also be looked at, again mainly to clean up any rough edges, and to polish it up.

Head porting is actually pretty basic stuff, the reason why it costs a bomb is because it's a shitty, dirty, and time consuming task. Spending hours sitting on a chair, hunched over a chunk of metal, making a shirt load of noise with a cranky little die grinder spinning at a gazzilion MPH.

EDIT: I should also add, that a well prepped head, can really make a big improvement in power right through the range. Heads are where all the power lies.

Rick.

I will back you on this.Headwork is tedious and painstaking work. For someone like me trying to get the perfect shape and size was very time consuming.I can see why shops charge so much. Every time I thought I had a port right..the next day it needed more work. I was told by the headflow shop that alot of people go backwards on headwork. After checking my work they did say I lost a little flow at lower exhaust lifts which may have cost me power. All in all when the chips are down the track tells the truth and the feeling of extra grunt doesnt lie either.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Sounds like the best thing to do would be to buy a head off eBay or the wreckers and read up on it, get a drill, be patient and do it properly and see what result you get.

Are i6 heads the same as on the VCT i6?

I'm guessing the chip would need a re-tune after it's added.

yeah fairenuff, my car definatley hasnt lost power, its definately gained more torque you can feel it, it pulls hard from 65km-85km mid-high range when you boot it. Everything Sox said above has been done to the head on my car, also from memory my exhaust valves are slightly bigger .6mm more. Wish i still had the detailed photos of the work.

Yes but Joe
Your head was the Worst head to start off with ...
Everything needed replacing and fixing.
Broken valves in the guides are not what everyone else has.
If it was not a XR6 head you would have just thrown it away and started again with another head.

A Normal port job comes in 3 stagers

1 Exhaust ports Bigger by 10mm
2 Exhaust and Throats ( Throats bigger by 12mm and 16mm from the low-veloss area)
3 Exhaust and Throats and Valves (sincro seat the valves + all above - bigger valves where possible)

When You do a full job you also make the inlet ports bigger as well.
done right will cost you about 800 now days ..... BUT thats new valves porting machining pressure testing and vacuum test with new valve stem seals and valve springs.

I have seen a few heads that have been "ported" and they have been so rough I think they let a blind guy go at it with a angle grinder and a sanding disc .

Most of the time people will tell you and 5 other people where they get there head work done if they are happy ....
If they don't like there job they will tell 20 people....
BUT did they not like the job in the end as it did not give as much performance as they thought ?

It is up to you as the person paying to decide if the money you want to spend will get you what you want.

trick_XD did my bros head(SIKSIX) and I can vouch for his work.
We decided to keep the std valves and just a cleanup, match ported the exhaust ports, new valve stem seals and decking of the head.
I don't want to discuss prices in the open but we were happy with the job and it was at least $200 cheaper then any other place I called(about 6 different head porting places).
Last time we spoke he was offerening a race head package that was tempting but a little too dear for our budget, still cheap compared to everywhere else.

The proof of his work, it ran 149rwks with a dev5 cam and 14.6@99mph and this was untuned, tuned(unichip) it make 155rwks and still yet to run it.
