It depends. I have both and I think it's horses for courses. My XR8 is manual and is suited to that type of car. On the other hand, I wouldn't want my Fairlane to be a manual.

I know they are quicker these days and less of a hassle in peak hour traffic - but I love my manual.

Auto for the family car that gets all the shopping duties, school runs, family trips etc. (XR6 - ZF 6speed). Manual for the second car which is basically a personal transport so might as well have fun with it (1989 MX5).

I don't mind a good auto. And I prefer an auto when I'm stuck in stop start peak hour traffic after a day at work with a headache. But I don't mind rowing the gears for a bit of fun (and that extra bit of control). They both have their places.

Auto. The other half can't drive a manual to save her life, but I still miss a good manual.

Manual, more fun to drive, also small 4 cylinder cars and slushbox doesn't match very well.

I've recently had the pleasure of driving an FG Cab-Chassis with the French 5 speed on board. I'm massively impressed with it, despite coming from a Manual AUIII XR8- I think it may actually be quicker in some circumstances.

That said, in most conditions, my car was more economical. Only on the really bad city stuff and foot to the carpet did it use less than the XR8. I think this is almost entirely due to the auto trans as I found it would unlock the torque converter and downshift unnecessarily under certain circumstances. e.g. Driving the 6km climb up mount Ousley, FG Ute used 26L/100km average, AU XR8 uses 19L/100km.

Even in sequential mode it didn't quite do what I wanted/expected it to do. That's why I bought a manual- I think even a bad manual (which the T5 DEFINITELY IS) can be better than a good auto in some situations...

Manual.
I recently got the curtsy call+email from Ford. My only gripe was the difficulty in getting the manual (check my posts). The six speed manual is a gem.

Manual for me. Only two things were really important when I bought my XR.
It had to be Blueprint, and a manual.

I've only ever driven a few autos, besides driving peoples cars around the carpark into the workshop at slow speeds. I drove this Hyundai Tiburon up to a customer with a 4sp auto and it was horrible, always in the wrong gear and it was very slow to kick down, it took a good 2 or 3 seconds to realise it should be kicking down.

Then I drove a new "Civic Sport Auto", same thing.

Then match the new Accord Euro with an auto and its horrible compared to the manual, so sluggish.

The only one I quite liked was the new Civic Hybrid, it seemed to read your mind what you wanted to do.

So I don't know much about Autos and how they drive except for Honda's ones, and they all suck.

If you don't really care how a car performs, then who cares, but unfortunately I do haha.

IMO, manual makes it a more fun drive, as you're more involved in the process (and if that makes me a "boy racer", so be it). Auto is easier in stop-start traffic. So I guess it depends on what sort of driving/driving style.

I own and prefer to drive a manual for that exact reason. The way that automatics are always in the wrong gear frustrates me. I've been brought up driving manual and notice the difference when i get in a car with someone who has only ever driven an auto.
So i am the automatic to my manual gearbox
