Default occasional clunk?

when driving along between 60 - 70 i occasionally hear a 'clunk' sound that seems to originate from the tailend of the vehicle, can anyone identify the problem?

tailshaft play, or back lash in the diff. my old diff did both these. does the clunk happen when you lift off the accelerator? or when a gear is upshifted? now with my lsd, which has had a fair share of flogging does an occasional clunk. id replace the diff oil and see if there is any change
