From memory its to keep the intake noise down, it can be remove if you put a pipe direct to T/B from air box, if you do a search you'll find info on thist topic and some pics of what I mean about the pipe.

Yes it keeps the induction quiet.

Not needed. just buy a welsh plug for a couple of bucks and put it in the hole (Use the existing hose clamp).

I didn't notice any real change in sound.

commonly referred to as the "dog ****", its a resonator to lower induction noise. nothing more.

Wow, i don't think i'll hear it over the RDP exhaust now anyway
I'll have to look for a hose that goes straight through, cause i think it will look better than a plug.
Thanks guys, need to find that hose now.

I have seen some with a tickford mag wheel centre in them, this looks a bit better than a welsh plug.

You could get a pipe made up like what I have.

Looks better and makes a good induction sound.

It's the squiggly bit and can be capped with a common 50 or 60mm PVC pipe cap painted black.

technical term is sonic box/tube. a lot of newer cars now have them. IMHO just a waste of space really as there is no noticible change when removed. sometimes we have to take them off to fit the converters in to an engine bay for LPG conversions. just plug them up with a cap that fits, be it a welsh plug, hard plastic bung or as previously suggested, ticky wheel center

I've been told it is also a buffer for backfire to prevent backfire blowing the S*** out of the airbox
