Default car won't start

i went out this arvo to go up the shops and the car won't start.i went up town early on in the morning and it was running fine.
i went to start it as i normaly do,and it just kept cranking over.its not even firing at at all.
the fuel pump comes on when i turn the key to start.i have checked all the leads and sensors and they are all connected.
its got me stumped ,they car ran fine now it won't start.could it be a fuse or something ?
any help appreciated thanks

likely culprits are usually battery/starter motor or alternator. i know with my xf when i replaced the alternator i had trouble starting it and i stressed over it for ages, it would turn over but not fire. i switched it from gas to petrol put some carby cleaner down its throat and it started fine, not sure why it did that but it never happened after that maybe try start it on petrol(if you have dual fuel).

if its turning over its not your battery/starter motor, or alternator.

even though the fuel pumps runing you could possibly have a fuel blockage, or the pump motor may be spinning but not pumping ifits broken, also check to see if you have a spark - it could be immobilised, or it could be something simple like a loose wiring connection somewhere (maybe to the coil pack), or even a dicky/loose fuse or relay in the power box under the hood

Remove a lead and place it close to earth.See if a spark is jumping .Dont hold it though.Apart from that maybe fuel is not gettting into the rail?

yeah ,that was next on my list.i'l have another fiddle in the mornin .i've had one hectic sunday arvo without a car(nik had us booked in for a family portrait).

when i turn the key to start the fuel pump whizzes for a bit until it builds up pressure ,so i assume its still working .

are there any sensors that would stop the motor from firing if they weren't working?

i don't think its the smartlock or whatever its called ,because the engine still cranks over.

there could be something thats come unplugged (coilpack or relays) , find out if youve got spark or not first, and that will help narrow it down.
also this may sound like a pretty dumb question, but is it out of fuel?

Its got no spark, all the fuses are ok, relays are in tight, all leads and plugs are hooked up properly.

could it be the coil pack? the car has been running fine.

i was reading in the old haynes manual under trouble shooting and it suggested that there could be something wrong with the ignition switch??? when i turn the key to start all the norm dash lights come on.

I've had the exactly the same problem before.

Turned out to be the 60A fuse in the engine bay.

Funniest thing was, the fuse LOOKED fine by visual inspection, lucky I checked it with the multimeter and realised it was blown.

Maybe worth a look for you just in case.

check the power distro box and check the fuses are ok, grab out your multimeter, and see if there is power getting to the "START" relay when you turn the key, this will tell you which side the problems on. if theres no power getting to it and the fuses are ok, it might be a dash side wiring issue, (disconnected, or melted through) or maybe even the same problem in the power distro box

otherwise check to see that the wiring harness plug to the coilpack hasnt come out, and that power is getting to the coilpack.
Theres also the possibility the coilpack is cactus, but that would more likeley wear out over time.

thanks for your help guys,i bit the bullet and got a mobile mech to come out.$230 later and the problem is fixed.it was the crank angle sensor.these guys sure know how to charge $120 to come out and 110 to plug the scan tool in .but at least its fixed now.

a couple of other codes came up on the scan tool P3381 and P0000.i tried looking them up in the haines manual but it dosen't have them listed.if someone knows what they are or where i can find out what they are i'd apreciate.

good to hear its solved, things like this is why I want one of those scanners.

On that note, does that mean the OBDII scanners on eBay will do the trick? is there anything in particular to look for to make sure thier compatible?

waggaclint, thanks for posting the codes mate.

yeah i was a bit suss about the codes. my car still runs a AU II SI ECU (S Pac). when he put the tool on he typed in AU I Futura so maybe that's confused some thing some where. i quizzed him about it but mechanic's know best.

so i guess there is some thing else to look for when your au will crank over but wont start
