Default RE: Restrictions for Probationary License

Hey All,
In regards to restrictions for P-platers, what counts as a modification to the engine and what doesnt? is a 2.5 inch cat back exhaust system illegal just because of its width, regardless if i keep the cat, muffler and resa? Im a victorian by the way, obtained my licence after July 1st. Internal engine modifications are quite easy to get away with and are of no worry to me. I have a pod filter i know thats illegal :evil3: as well as a home made cold air intake. Im to impatient to wait till i am off my p-plates. Engine modifications are all around my life and family so im craving it. Extractors illegal too? even though i am sure i could hide them with a decent sized heat shield...Im just curious as ill probably do all this anyway, but i would like to find as many loop holes as possible, as well as keep most mods hidden in secrecy. The pod i have to build a heat shield for anyway, or ill just return it to stock air box with better flow. Any advice or ideas guys i dont know where to look or call for the REAL technicalities.

I thought the rules are for performance mods, what if you told them the modification was for economy ???

i'd most certainly try that angle, however when they hear tat deep note bellow out from my exhaust...how can i debate my point across? whilst there is no restrictions on the actual noise from your exhaust besides Decibells, 96 i think it is, it arouses much interest from the coppaz! enviting them to examine more of your car. I just want technicalities and loop holes....any thoughts always welcome, cheers JCXR.

Put the pod in a box (what you should be doing anyway) and they won't know the difference.

I thought as long as the car doesn't go over the power to weight ratio you should be fine (for cars that you can drive), but never really read up on it as I've been of my p's for 3 years.

As far as i can tell, for P-platers like me who have their licence after July 1st, "you cannot drive anything with 8 cylinders or higher, anything turbo or supercharged (except diesel), NOTHING THAT HAS BEEN PERFORMANCE ENHANCED OR MODIFIED, or any high performance 6's) And thats straight from the vic roads site! looooopppp holesss? Exaust system shouldnt count as performance mod, its strictly emmissions and if placing extractors and a high flow cat with a 3 inch system impoves power, too bad, im just doing it for fuel economy :p keep discussing

Sports exhaust, air filters and pod filters, CAI are not under the P plater performance enhancement laws.

The NSW RTA told me as i inquired about it.

An unenclosde pod is illegal. Should be fine if its in a sealed enclosure. A silver heat sheild that covers half the pod does not count either

Hi
I own a 1972 Datsun 510 with an L20 motor, a side draught weber
and extractors. Is this classed as an engine modification in
relation to the new p plate laws
Thanks

The reply i got went like this
Thank you for your recent comments (copy below) via the arrive alive!
website regarding Victoria's new Graduated Licensing System for high
powered vehicles.

As supplied by VicRoads Vehicle Safety, the following are modifications for
a normally aspirated 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder engine, that are considered
to increase the power of the engine;

engine management systems
exhaust systems (particularly extractors)
fuel injection or carburettor change
camshafts

The legislation specifies that if the vehicle is modified to increase its
performance, (over that by the specified manufacturer) then its engine
performance has been increased so it cannot be driven by a probationary
driver under the new scheme.

if your still living in VIC (it says your from Geelong in your details) then your wife will not be able to drive it when she obtains her p's as it is a v8

Well if you get pulled over say that the exhaust manifold cracked and you could not source another one, and that the rest of the exhaust system and original muffler corroded away so you put the closest to stock one you could find :evil3:
Thats what i would say

I rang up the RTA twice and got two different answers:

1) Anything changed from factory is illlegal.

2)As long as the engine is internally stock your fine (eg.no cams) Exhaust and extractors are fine.

I just said faark it and put my exhaust on. Cops can't hear it unless you plant it.

You're going to have so many varied answers given the different states people live in. I would suggest:
a) contacting vicroads - either call them or go into an office and make sure you don't leave until you 100% understand what they have said.
b) Speak to the police in your area. They will be the ones pulling you up for driving a vehicle you shouldnt be, or that has modifications it shouldnt have.
