Default Police Hand Held radar speed detection - Sign ?

in NSW At one time, a police officer using a hand held radar speed gun had to place a sign on the road indicating that police radar speed checking was in progress.

Is this still the case ?

Doubtful.

In QLD they dont have to, they can park the car off to the side of the road and point it at you wihtout a sign..

for road side speed cameras they do, but not for handhelds.

In any case the sign was placed on the road surface, after the trap.

Must find out current procedure.

I'm sure it's mobile speed cameras that they place the sign and usually after you've gone through it. Handhelds never needed a sign because if you're speeding you generally get waved in. So how much over did you score?

here in qld they put a sign out for the speed camera cars. used to be down the road about 100m before the camera car but these days its usually leaning against the side of the car or over in the grass some where so you only see it as you are passing the camera, too late by then.

Pretty sure after that copper run down on the freeway last year, they're not aloud to anymore...

But my mother-in-law's best friend's husband is a HWP officer, he reckons that by the time you see any radar, it's too late. They have a massive range, especially the the ones mounted to HWP cars.

Depends how reliable the Handheld Radar is.

It's not uncommon for certain obstacles to vary readings. Even if you don't speed you're still guilty in this country.

In NSW sign is used for mobile cameras, same as fixed. Not for hand helds.

A mob in england who sell radar detectors reckon if you angle your number plate towards the ground a slight angle it will deflect the beam from hand held radar gun making the reading on there gun difficult to have a stable reading. Do not know how true it is. He reckons the number plate is the main target to reflect beam??

Not exactly correct.

Radar beam will reflect off any metallic surface.
Lidar beam will reflect from any reflective surface, especially headlight assemblies.
