Anyhows, my 5x7 Orion front speakers are rubbish and ive got some 6.5's lying around. Question is:
Would they fit into the doors without to much mucking around? Ie, Do i need really spacers?

Yes mate, you'll need spacers.

You can either:

* Make them yourself out of 9mm MDF.
* Bduy them from JB Hi Fi or equivalent, or buy them off a few members here.

Look in the Audi visual section and there is a thread on 5x7 and towards the end there is a link to an eBay store that sells 6.5 to 5x7 speaker mounts

I used some ply wood spacers(just what i had laying around in the right size)
the only other thing you MAY need to do is trim some of the plastic from the back of the speaker grill and where the door trim curves back to where the grill clips onto as it was jabbing into the rubber of my speakers
I just used one of those supercheap dremels with the cutting wheel attachment
