When I transferred rego for my V8 back 3 years ago it cost me nearly $600 just to get it in my name... registering vehicles in QLD is highway robbery considering that 'roads and infrastructure' go to poo 15km outside the CBD.

If memory serves you need to pay all three if the vehicle has already got a roadworthy certificate (valid) and you're going down to register it.

I didn't need to get the 'unregistered vehicle' permit as I was going directly to and from the roadworthy place and had papers displayed on the dash.

If you're transporting it from one place to another the first and third fee will apply most likely, however I'd ring them to be 100%. TMR are usually very friendly so it shouldn't be a drama

The Transport Department I have always found to be very helpful here in Queensland.
Of course, as with staying at a five star hotel, when I'm paying that amount of monye, I expect the hired help to be polite to me.

To drive an unregistered car from point A to point B will cost $27 per day needed for the permit. You also pay a one off fee of $50 plus $1 per day for CTP insurance. This can be arranged with any CTP insurer by paying the fee over the phone, having the certificate emailed to you, which you print out and take it to your local transport dep to apply for the permit.

The exemption for a permit is if you have paid for 6/12 months CTP insurance, drive straight to the mechanic doing the roadworthy, if it passes then straight to the transport dep to lodge paperwork & pay rego fees.

half of that is one off duty tax. Example the quote is $900 rego fee on a $15000 6 cylinder car. Just put $8000 as the 'dutiable value' and the quote will drop $200..........

Need a bit more information before giving the correct answer although AU Mont has come close.
Are you in the process of getting the car registered?
Are you just moving it from A to B?
Is it in roadworthy condition?
Does it have a Safety Certificate?

Ahh... your new to QLD arent you??

QLD has the highest rego in the country. Always been this way.

IF you think permit to drive is expensive, a tilttray willprobably cost you the same if not more depending on the distance.

If its a short distance tilttray is certainly the way to go
Maybe the next town sorta thing, one side of say brissie to the other unless on a cheap backload, day permit will be a few hundred cheaper
I think when i moved the ED last year,i had to get the insurance sorted for the day first, before fronting to main roads as they dont do the insurance side, well not where i went anyway, good to wait in line for a few hours to be told that
Get the insurance sorted, i think it was something silly like $50, then back to main roads for the days permit
Was rather exxy i thought, but tilt tray was near $500
If the vehicle is getting moved to obtain a RWC, there are people who do onsite RWC,saves more there, then get the insurance sorted then get the reg sorted
The car doesnt need to be inspected,RWC done at home, and stays there till it regoed
Rego for a 6 in QLD , there goes best part of $800 ...

Qld used to be the cheapest by far to rego a car. It's only in recent times the greedy bastards in government inflated it.

If you can't get a tilt tray or pay the rego but still need to move an unregistered car then the other method is:

1) Put different plates on front and back.
2) Replace one mag with a steel rim. Make sure no tyre treads match.
3) Glue on a "bow tie" badge (except of course if the car is a Chevrolat in which case glue on a corvette badge). This applies equally to holden, ford or import.
4) Put a big HSV/No Fear/Jet Pilot/Oakley sticker in an obvious place.
5) Do not shave (even if female).
6) Wear dirty clothes with inappropriate logo and fake designer sunglasses.
7) Have a half burned winfield blue hanging out of your mouth.
8) Drive with the window down and your arm hanging out.

Remember the best way to hide a tree is in a forest........

But in saying all this I have always use commercial car transporters which cost me about $200 to move cars up to 400km.

Get dodgy rwc, then get it regoed and fix everything at your own pace.
That's how I've done every car I've bought here except my first El and my fg. Both dealers cars.
Qld should have mandatory 6 monthly inspections. Would eliminate a lot of crap vehicles on the road.

As I've been driving since the 60s, '95 is recent to me.

Still need a permit to transport an unregoed car to go get that dodgy
Or get the bloke to come onsite like i do
The days of dodgy road worthies are far and few between unless you know the bloke doin them
Walk of the street and ask for a dodgy ,youll be told flat "No"
As for the 6 month/yearly inspections, well if people got legit proper road worthies to begin with there would be less POS on the road .....

Kinda double standards .....
Your fine getting a dodgy ,but everyone else should do 6 month inspections ...

If it's driveable put it on a transporter, otherwise hire a trailer and go for a drive.

Lol, does come across as a bit hypocritical doesn't it.

But really if there was proper regular inspections done, then hopefully there would be proper controls in place to stop what happens currently where so many workshops find faults that aren't there just to make more business.

I would be quite happy getting legit and regular rwcs if that was the system in place. Current system is too open to abuse.
While dodges may be harder to get theyre certainly not impossible, and as you say that's where the system falls down.

But getting somewhat off topic I guess.

Hmm, how does this 6 monthly RWC work for people who have a 9-5 job or people who do not live in the Brisbane 'burbs or any number of situations that don't apply directly to you?

How about this idea?

Rego is calculated by how much public transport is available as an alternate to driving.

In the bush or regional areas it would be almost free but in an urban city area with lots of bus and rail not too far away (e.g. Tingalpa) it would be, for a high powered car like a FPV, maybe $2-3000 per year to compensate for the loss of income but that would be compensated by all the cheap bus fares.

And of course as there are lots of places to get road worthies maybe the number you need per year is proportional to how easy they are to get so again in an inner urban area one every 3 months should be sufficient whereas outside the city maybe just when you buy or sell a vehicle.

I am fairly sure the people who live is the 90% of QLD would like this idea and as the majority of crap cars on TV are always in the city it is only logical that this would work well.

Or is this also just another completely silly idea like yours that would cause huge amounts of unnecessary grief for the majority just to look after a minority?

QLD tried or looked into the yearly/half yearly RWC quite awhile ago,if memory serves me right
There wasnt or isnt enuf inspection places to compensate for this
So this opens up more "dodgy places" making a quick buck on the governments back
Id love rego to be calculated on what public transport is avaliable local
Lets see, 1 bus goin to caboolture ( major town 1 1/2 hours away)daily down and back, leaves town i think 5.30 am, comes thru 3.30 pm, so shoots down busing to work and back, theres no taxis in town or the nest town either way
People whinge about getting RWC and the likes,i had to skull drag my tandem trailer 1 hour to get a machinery so i could get it regoed, that was after i drove an hour for the insurance to do it
Id love sometimes to live in the burbs ,oh the convenience of things, but my i couldnt fathem the stupidity and idiots im afraid ...

I can only compare it to nz, where I'm sure you know people also work 9-5 jobs, it's been that way for a long time and it's doesn't cause any 'unnecessary grief' if you look after your car.
In nz there is specialist wof centers, no appointment needed, you just drive up, pay your money and get the inspection done. Some also have late nights and open Saturdays. Plus your usual workshops etc can issue wofs.
So not that hard....

Get it inspected for aprox $50 and even if it fails then you've 28 days to fix what's been noted before you have to pay for another inspection.

You don't think the majority would benefit from safer cars on the road?

Wof - warrent of fitness. Nz equivalent of rwc.

.
Or early days in NSW where every car failed for wear in the ball joints and the car couldn't be moved until made safe..

Mind you, I wouldn't be averse to a mandatory five year/100,000 km inspection that was really tough..
No, Queensland puts the onus where it should be on the owner to properly maintain their car
and for the most part I recon that most owners are law abiding and ensure their vehicles are reasonably safe.

Everytime some government genius comes up with a "good plan" it ends up costing everyone more
and inevitably punishes the majority of dilligent owners instead of targeting the very few miscreants...

It would be interesting to see the results if the cops set up a rwc checkpoint somewhere in Brisbane, and say pulled over 50 cars in a row, no bias, no letting any through, and see what they found.

Be nice to think most would pass straight through.

They do occasionally.

I'm with jdp80 and Flappist. It's the owners responsibility to look after their car.

Yes in a world where people do the right thing.... but sadly a lot dont.

One need only to look at the growing percentage of crap boxes on the road.

Yes but if the mandatory RWC worked there would be no crap boxes with NSW rego and a quick trip to Western Sydney will show you just how effective it has been.

Is the percentage of POS on the road relevant to the population growth, specially in QLD of late ???
As far back as i can remember there were always the odd junket on the road and there were always dodgy road worthies being done
Not saying it doesnt happen, it still does, but doin a $50 /$100 dodgy aint worth losing a main source of work or income
Those who say their cars are 100 % road worthy, youd be surprised how thorough a proper road worthy is,many who say their car is fine would be shocked that it wouldnt be
As for random road side inspections, the good old QLD lads have "operation whatevers" all the time , pick a common type vehicle ,find a roadway wide enuf and pull over anything of that type
4x4s are the top target of recent times, but ive been pulled over in a "Pull over every truck month"
I understand the onus on the owner or motorist, but most people wouldnt know where the oil goes, let alone knowing theres something thats not road safe on their car
