Default Anyone here own a Maverick / Patrol (GQ)?

I recently picked up a GQ Patrol to tow my race car with, so thought id find out if anyone else here owns a Patrol/Maverick.

Already starting to mod it, bought some extractors for it yesterday :

My last car was gq 4.2 diesel patrol. These are just about unbreakable. Did a lot of offroading including 2 trips across simpson desert. In 4 years never laid a spanner on it apart from mods or regular servicing. Standard diesel is a little underpowered but you only appreciate it when you get off road. I have film of mine crawling up big red (the largest sand dune in the Simpson) in first gear low range where the next car ( new pajero turbo) took 4 tries to do same. Also diesels on same trip used 95 litres where the petrols used 120 litres to cross the desert (oodnadtta to birdsville)

No i've only got a MQ. But got quite a few mates with GQ's - bullet proof drivelines and good vehicles for towing. Rear diffs did have a reputation for being noisy. (would remain noisy and generally still not break!)

Can quite easily handle a power increase.

Only thing to avoid - an RB30 powered GQ as these had significantly smaller gearboxes. Go the 4.2 in either petrol or diesel but may need LPG for petrol as very thirsty.

yep ive found the petrol to be very thirsty, but mine has LPG so it makes it more realistic

bprint_xr8 has a valid point, from what ive heard you would want to avoid the RB30 full stop. Not only the much smaller g/b, but very much underpowered for the truck size!

4.2 seems to have reasonable power, and tows ok - so much better than the later model hilux i had been using its not funny

The 7 seats are great, and when theyre folded up you can fit so much gear in the back :hihi:

We have a landcruiser but Dave's best mate has a GQ - it had a stock diesel engine but is now an intercooled turbo. It's a tough 4wd with an awful lot of km's on the clock and still going strong.

I had a GQ for about 5 years, jacked it, thrashed it never broke anything except the 5th gear synchro and a transfer case seal.. brilliant 4wd, never even came close to getting bogged... .. . .

.. although the 7 inch liftkit and 35inch high tyres on 10inch wide rims probably had something to do with that haha

I acually sold my Mav to get my XR - i initially bought it so i wouldnt mod it - that didnt happen - tint, lift kit, radios etc beautiful 4wd had a couple of good 4wdriving trips in that thing. !!

i got a pajero and i so shoulda got a GQ :P

honestly strongest 4wd on the road i reckon,landcruisers and patrols and so easy to modify too

outerlimits might be a place to visit mate

well spent a few hours this weekend bashing through the sand dunes down in gippsland, what a blast!

the number of patrols / mavericks there was amazing, they out numbered everything else 5 to 1.

going to take me about 3 weeks to get all the dust out of it though

I have an '89 Maverick, I bought it in '91 with 22,000. Mine is a diesel, it now has a misely 190,000k's on it. I got it turbo'd mid last year at 180,000. the diesels are exceptionally under powered when towing, that is why i turbo'd mine.

As everybody has said they are pretty much unbreakable.

If the one you bought is post '95, then 5th gear can be a bit dodgy, they are also know for body cracks underneath, but I think only after a bit of 4wding.

The whole GQ design remains under the GU except for a different body. The whole GQ thing was a smaller version of the UD truck.

Steer very clear of anything under 4.2 litre.

Just a thought.... If they came with a RB30, and the RB26DETT bolts straight in its mounts as should the AWD driveline from a GTR.... 10 sec Patrol anyone?

No Need, my Porsche mechanic has now moved up to Brisbane and he turns out some really weird cars, check the link for his twin turbo v8 nissan patrol, runs an infinity vh45, straight lpg, steering paddle shifter, twin coolers etc etc, smokes up hard and digs trenches on anything that aint road surface.

There was a guy a few years back who had a 350 Chev in a Maverick and it came close to winning the "go to whoa" at the Springcar Nationals.

Alot of the competition 4WD's have big chev engines in them now - you should hear them out in the scrub at the comps, they sound awesome.

hehe very nice, ive been in a 280Z with the same motor config, totally insane, 422rwkw i think he said it had.... sound nice as too!!
