Default Cars with 9" diff

need a bit of info on what models of cars came equipped with the 9" limited slip rear diff. can anyone help?

General rule is any factory fitted 351 pre XD.
I think disk was introduced in XBGT.

Are you after pics of the diff or pics of the cars?

Don't forget that a variety of american cars came with the 9 inch diff as well.

i just put a new 9" diff in my car, XC 351, never looked back its awesome, although u will find urself sideways around conners more often, last night when it was raining, i was going around a conner at 15km/h and even went sideways then, OH THE FUN!!

I will tell you now Josh it can turn to S*&t very Quickly let me tell you. This was in the dry to. The clutch pack let go and this was the result. My advice is to watch your self.

All 9" in Aussie cars are LSD..Yep pre XD and fitted mainly with 351 engines..It varied though some 2v/ 2 barrel 351's had b/w diff...Disc brakes came out on XC...

Rear Disk brakes came out on Landau's in 72. All XBGTs which first came out in mid 73 had rear disks.
All 351 powered Fords (utes vans sedans limo's etc) had 9" rear's till the end of XC.
If you ordered an LSD in your non 351 powered XW or XY you also got a 9".
XA onwards had LSD BW's for non 351 powered cars.

XA RPO 83 coupe and Landau of 72 all had disc rear.
As said, all XB GT, Landau LTD and 351 Fairlane had Disc LSD 9"
There were open centre 9" cars sold here too, alot of XA XB utes, Fairmonts etc.

RPO 83's DID NOT have disk rear end, they ALL had drum _2:

Check your records good man, they definatly did, and were unable to have enough made in time for bathurst, so they also had them under the bum of the Landau, and argued with CAMS that they were essentially the same vehicle, being 2 door body shells, same 351 engine etc. It worked and the XA Goss ran and won in was disc rear equipped, so was Moffs....

I do believe that the 4 doors have drum rears though, but know that alot of the 2 doors definatly had them

Funny thing is the author of the thread is located in Bangor, N. Ireland. I don't think all this technical debate on what falcons had what 9 inch diffs really matters, when he asked what cars had 9 inch diffs...

cheers for the response, if someone could post both a car and a diff pic or two would be interesting. am looking for a straightforward replacement for my cossie that will handle a fair old bit of power too. and ИИИИ out action on the greasy roundabouts

Yes Ford Racing did some funny things, especially when it came time to lobby for homologation freedoms, ive got all the CAMS homologation docs for the RPO! but what they did to the race cars is not production car manufacturing!
I can assure you 100% that no RPO left the broady line with rear Disks, a friend did allot of research on this topic for the RPO story in AMC, including build sheet details etc, and he owns a VERY rare RPO coupe (with rear drums), i know of about 30 RPO coupes, all with rear drums too. Your right though about the Landau though, they tried to use the Landau as an excuse to allow the XA to race with disks, which was only done because the RPO didnt have rear disks! : .

"Cossie"? Cosworth Serria (spelling?) or something? If so, I'd think ANY 9" you find will need significant reworking to fit. The most narrow is probably from a sixties Stang (expensive) .. maybe a Stang 8" would be better .. or even some hi-po Japanese one? If the car doesn't weight much I doubt it needs a 9", more likely a strengthened stocker or something?

BTW: I've had 9" in a XB GS, XC GXL and 2x F100s. All of them gave be grief .. continuious bearings/seals problems. All the supposedly "weak" other diffs I've had (BWs, AMC20s, Mopar8.75") haven't given me any trouble ..

Thanks Ozjavelin. im trying to get some background info at the moment. i have been told that there is a 9" diff that will slot straight into the Sierra rear beam. A friend of mine in Australia at the moment and given the info & viability, would source one for me and arrange shipping back home. Might all be a waste of time but does no harm to ask

Might be worthwhile contacting one of the race teams that used them or a derivative of the 9 inch diff in the sierra RS500.
Maybe contact djr through their website: http://www.djr.com.au

alternatively, get one cut down to suit?

Beat me to it.
As the story goes, DJ couldn't keep even the race prepped factory diffs in his Sierra, so he developed and then homologated for Group A racing(no mean feat!) a diff that used 9" internals and bolted up to the factory mounting holes and used the rest of the sierra rear suspension (Although the Aussie Group A cars used alot of Harrop bits).
Finding one would probably be easier for you over in the UK because most of the Euro Group A cars wound up with the DJR designed and developed diffs in them (care of Andy Rouse i believe)

Funny, I just couldn't keep a BW in 1 piecce under my car (axles and spiders), however a friend of mine puts 500+hp through a Mopar8.75... he's bent the housing but its still in one piece... 2.75 ratio with a turbo'd Hemi6.
