Barely 20 years old and "young and dumb", I was driving my Mk 1 Cortina down an arterial Rd Near Sydney one night. For a while I had been held up by two slow cars travelling together. At the first opportunity to pass I pulled out to overtake, when halfway past the first car, an oncoming car came around the corner ahead of me, I tried to pull back in but they blocked me, no time to brake, so I turned my headlights off, but left the parkers on, indicated right and drove down the right hand shoulder of the road and let the oncoming car pass between us, closest I've ever been to oblivion

I have always been more care full when overtaking since then. and that was nearly 50 years ago.

Probably not my stupidest but still funny. I was 19 and had just had my first date with a girl I was really into. Reversing out the driveway after dropping her off I backed into the wheelie bin which knocked it onto the road.

Smooth move.

So ,so, many. From memory, #1, just on P's, two mates in the car, Dad's XC 250 Wagon (the beautiful bright Orange paint). Night time, I had one beer only. Driving on a local street in Bunbury, this particular street has a slight right hand bend that tightens as you move through it. Still only doing about 60k's (but it's getting tight), I'm aiming for the 'apex' and crossed over to the right lane.
It was great until a set of headlights comes booming around the bend, a flick to the left and heavy breaking in the grass and me apologising to my mates. Visited the site the next day, big braking ruts in the grass.
#2 Heading East with two buds, 1982. Big adventure in my rusty old AP6 Wagon. We shared the driving, filled up at Balladonia around 1am. It was my stint at the wheel and the plan was to drive to the border and then pull up stumps for a break. It was around 5am, chugging along at 80kmh (thank God the Valiant had a heavy accelerator pedal) that I experienced my first micro sleeps. Waking up on the other side of the road. Easy does it, get back on the left.
Around 6am, my mate Frank wakes up. I mentioned I was feeling tired but okay. Stay with me and we'll be cool for the stop. We went through a mission control check of the gauges (I'd installed a Vacuum, Tacho and Oil Pressure gauge to augment the standard gear as I figured, gauges picked up chicks ) All was in spec.
Woke up driving through the scrub off the right hand side of the road. Seeking the tarmac in a panicky, sleepy frame of mind, I rolled the car 3/4, ending up drivers side down. Long one short, so many great people stopped to help at 6am. Thank God we where all okay.
There have been many others.

My stupidest coincides with my luckiest too.

Thought I could drift a BA falcon, in the wet on a down hill, off cambre right hander, at 90kph..

Turns out I couldn't.. However what was the lucky part, is that I ended up doing a 720, off the road to the only vacant block in the entire street.. Needless to say I have never tried anything like that again.
