When I got my licence there were no restrictions on what you could drive. I started to learn car control from about the age of 10 by driving old beat up pieces of junk in the cloverfields back home and my first car at 17 was a 1976 4 speed, 308 HX Ute. I can't honestly say I really had control of it but I was lucky and survived that period but one thing I did learn from losing a few friends, it's not necessarily the power of the car that kills as low power vehicles can also get up enough of a head of stream to quickly distinguish a life. Limiting power to novice drivers is a smart move but it still won't save them from themselves. . |

Firstly I didn't know this forum had so many 90+ year old members. A lot of people seem to be taking this thread as a personal attack on their driving. I don't think most people would consider people in their 60s are 70s as old drivers.

NSW it states something like you have to follow instructions related to the lane that you enter the roundabout in. You are allowed to change lanes on a roundabout but you have to give way to vehicles in the other lane. Quote:
Then people wonder why some other drivers are sitting 10m from the car in front at high speed. Last edited by Ben73; 04-07-2020 at 11:13 PM. |

The same ones.
Ford I'm sure has good drivers too but lack of knowledge stands out. (people ^ don't even understand a basic roundabout) Old and/or incapacity to drive and risk to others due to health get off the road. Buses, trams, trains, Ubers exist. |

Like you say it's not hard. Give way to other vehicles on a roundabout (usually on your right..... if they're on your left someone's doing it wrong) and blink off when exiting.

You are an absolute clown.......seriously. That has nothing to do with my near accident due to (old) idiot driver cutting off as in wrong lane. Read my diagram again. It's grade 5 stuff. |

I never mentioned your near miss, I was just pointing out the basics of roundabout rules.

If you enter the roundabout the same time as the bloke on ya right, he does not have right of way unless he is in something very big. |

Again. The Blue car has NO RIGHT to cross the green car. Nothing to do with roundabout rules as the left car never entered it ffs as straight or left only. |

I actually think it's great...it stops those idiots who scream up to a roundabout just cause they are approaching to your right. But of course many blokes at the pearly gates screaming out that they had the right of way...so survival instincts usually kick in. Quote:
Remember though...just cause a vehicle is in the right lane and if you are entering the left lane he still has the right of way in both lanes...because he is already in the roundabout....and you are not. BUT...entering a roundabout also crosses a Give Way line, therefore the give way to vehicles already on the roundabout takes precedence. That...is the law, perhaps imperfect but a law, whether one agrees with it or not. |

There's no doubt a lot of drivers don't understand when to or not to give way at a roundabout.
I see many drivers who think they're on a priority road and steam roll in at full speed expecting all other drivers to give way and I see driver's stop to give way to cars on their right that are still 40 metres from the roundabout. The one thing I don't see from the more aggressive drivers is any hint of slowing down on approach as is required for all drivers coming into a roundabout. That in itself would assist the more timid drivers and actually improve the flow of traffic at busy locations as originally intended by the law makers. A special mention should also be made of Cav's good advice to always give way to something very big. . |

I've found putting on my hat when approaching roundabouts enhances my roundabout power.

But any of us who got their licence in country areas in the early '60s had older cars that were very limited in power, handling, braking and safety. Think of FX Holdens, Vauxhalls, Ford Prefects, Austin A40s, and Morris Minors. Motoring in slow motion for the impatient youth. |

You guys give way to others at roundabouts?
Same with traffic lights: Green - go Yellow - go faster Red - look, then go I understand what MercuryT is getting at, some geriatric turned right from the left lane of the roundabout when they shouldn't have. I wasn't aware TAS had hook turn roundabouts Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 05-07-2020 at 11:36 AM. |

My favourite is the 'If I don't look at you you're not there' approach.
