G'day, Posting this up for my old man.
He has a 98 model AU Falcon Forte with a 5.0L. It has a big idle problem, but it comes every now and then. Gradually worsening until it has to go to a workshop. the rpm can greatly vary at a stand still up until the point where the car runs unbelievably rough, then it goes back to normal. So for $3000 has been spent this month to avail, includes new coild packs, new leads, plugs, injectors have been twice in 3 weeks, car has been serviced and dyno tuned. Then hooked up to a comp which shows no faults. Any ideas, had one suggestion that it could be the idler step down. The old man says: 'it's breaking my balls.'

It could be a vacuum leak around the inlet manifold - spray around with mild soapy water while car is running - you should be able to see if there is a leak somewhere. It could also be the Idle speed control valve. This is attached to the throttle body and should be cleaned every 12 months or so - if it's never been cleaned, it may be sticking. Same for the MAF element - if it's dirty, it will cause the car to run funny, but not only at idle.
I'd bet on the ISC valve, personally.
