Hey Everyone

The election has been held and won by the democrats. The thread topic is actually now done and dusted, however, I understand that people would like to talk about the result.

Despite being a political thread, we have let it run as people were being reasonable in their posting styles. It appears though, this has not been the case in the last day or so.

Either keep it on topic and be civil to each other or the usual suspects are going to back the moderators into a corner and have to close the thread.

It actually hasn’t been won by the democrats, no official final result for the presidential election has been made public.

Fair enough. Let me rephrase...

If the thread continues in the same manner as it has in the last day or so, it will be closed before a result is made official.

I do find it amazing, and perhaps a little bit scary, how people in Australia get so worked up about the American electoral process. Care so much about the ego's and what they stand for like it in some way effects them directly and its their own vote that has been put in doubt...

You know, one of the strongest reasons Trump resonates with people is they are are sick of others thinking they are superior and looking down at them as fools. Look it up, its a well described phenomenon. Now look how your posts look....Condescending much?

The social issues/politics/cultural wars in the American election are not unique and similar debates occur in Australia. The importance of the USA to Australian security (do you remember that we fall under there nuclear banner?) means that the US election and foreign policy direction is critical to us, not only for security but also trade.

The strange thing is a large percentage of Trump Supporters come from demographics that are seriously struggling financially, socially etc, yet many aggressively oppose “Socialist systems” that many Western Countries have (because the Republicans very much oppose them) :

Healthcare (eg: our Medicare)
Unemployment benefits (eg: our Centrelink)
Public Housing (eg: Ministry of housing systems)
Subsidised Prescription medication.
Fair tax for low wage earners.
Etc ...

This apparently is “Communism” or “Radical Socialism” 😉

Ref: Australia, UK, France, Germany, Canada, etc

I say good luck to them, I like our Social systems here in Australia.

other than the obvious spelling mistake, that is is an extreme generalisation

I am not a fan of:
* enforced (COVID-19) vaccines (Liberal idea)
* Clive Palmer
* The Greens
* Pauline Hanson

I do however lean towards Labor's policies, because I care about ALL Australians not just the top end of town, although I do acknowledge when the Liberals get it right with social policies (which aren't that many, but there are some)

you could quote both sides of the ocean "we are strategic partners", "we are best friends", "we are part of ANZUS (without NZ)" etc, etc, etc

whether some here like it or not the USA directly impacts on us - did you forget old mate Trumps inclusion of us in his tariffs?

We should care in Australia what America does, it directly impacts us, how many US bases and military people are in Australia right now?

If you don't think that their election directly impacts on us then you have your head in the sand

As I stated I am a member of a US drag racing forum, they are mostly Trump supporters and the language around supporting those less fortunate is extraordinary. There is just no tolerance among them for supporting anyone other than themselves. I can't type here what they actually say as the auto-censor kicks in, but the lack of empathy is extreme

We have a large operation in one of the states in the US. And you would have no idea they would have voted red, but they did.

People need to stop generalising an entire population or society based on what they see on TV or based on a couple of "leaders".

Imagine if Americans thought we were all Pauline Hansons or Clive Palmers (no offence to their supporters), just because they get a bit of air time.

whilst we speak the same language and have a similar heritage they are vastly different people to us. Mind you it would be great if most Aussies had the same patriotic spirit as they seem to, but we keep our 'caring for others' attitude

The ones I interact with call us a 'liberal' country, too generous to the under-privileged

Mind you they call us 'convicts' when are getting cheesed with us, which always invokes a laugh and this response form me - "you do understand that America was a dumping grounds for UK criminals long before Australia - it wasn't until your War of Independence that they sent them here instead" that generally shuts them up pretty quick, coz most have no idea we share the same heritage

Absolutely correct, the country was built on "the American Dream" It was go and stake your claim, not go and put your hat out. It was if you fall, pick yourself up and try again.

Right or Wrong, it resulted it the most powerful, richest country in history, up till now, we will see what happens in the next 20 years.

on a related side note - how an early American kid would have answered this question that we expect a different answer in todays world

that attitude was fine when there was work for everyone, manufacturing was done internally, people employed because they needed manpower

Times are very different now, they sold their manufacturing off, just like us, mostly to China, their car industry relies on Gvmt handouts to survive like ours did until the current Gvmt stopped the support

Now most of American manufacturing is a waste land, and not everyone can get employed in 'tech' jobs. Technology creates unemployment, the more people invent machines to do what people do there is going to be unemployment

Want to watch something interesting, or read something interesting, Google 'Flint', a former GM town - enjoy, coz they don't

We used to ride horse and carts too.

I agree we need to balance tech and jobs, I think you will find CV19 was a little wake up to most nations. If that doesnt change anything then nothing will.

How is Trumpypoo going today anyway, his swing is getting a good work out.

I guess the Hollywood stars will be happy, they can keep bringing their underpaid, illegal immigrant workforce in to care for their properties.

What you see on TV of the flag waving red or blue's they are are a minority and generally the vast majority are the same as us, you wouldn't know who was a Dem or who was a Rep. There is a generalisation that everyone in the movies and on TV are 'liberal's' until one of them speaks out in favour of the Rep's then they are hero's lol

Interesting string of events. Draw your own conclusions.
  1. Wall built around WH
  2. General Services Administration won't sign transition letter
  3. Secretary of Defence fired.
  4. Top Pentagon Policy official resigns (fired?), replaced by someone who once called Obama a terrorist leader.
  5. Department’s top civilian officials for policy and intelligence resign enmass.
  6. Pompeo talks smooth transition on a Trump 2nd term.

Where is Alex Jones these days?

I am going to laugh like hell in here when all the court cases have been done and dusted and Trump is the loser

And typical, a few can't debate rationally so they turn to personal insults, the one who looks stupid is you, you are showing the world your level of intelligence, that you can't debate, you can just throw insults. When it starts, it is indicator that you have nothing left to argue with

Saying you’re a good debater or saying your opponents aren’t good debaters doesn’t make you a good debater. To the contrary in fact, as you’re attacking the person rather than the positions backed with irrefutable evidence. Now if you want to win people to your side, have a point about something substantive and make a good case for it.
