Yep,this was just leftover from doing the rims on a mates bike years ago, thousands of kms later its still on the bike and looking good. You can actually buy it now in pre curved sections for different size bike rims which is what i will do ie just buy 2 sets of tape for 18 inch bike rims.

I painted my tickford rims, same as yours, satin black with the worlds worst prep work and they still look good IMO and have had many compliments on them. They have gone a little towards to matt side of the scale because of lack of appropriate care but they still look good when clean!

To be safe, silver you can't go wrong. Personally I'd stay away from chrome. The red pin strip on black rims looks good too. Could stick with a polished rim, or go for a rim with a deep dish dark colored center and polished lip.

If you were going to powdercoat, I'd suggest white.
But as for painting; Silver. I liked how GK's AU1 rims turned out. I thought he was going to go yellow initially , but the silver worked out okay.

LOL, yes, yellow would have been better. But the silver is fine, and only one rim requires a touch up.

Wish I known about the rims skins prior to completely sanding one rim! Bugger!!!!

rims would have a copper plating first , then the chrome will stick.

That's great, but unless you can tell me how painting a set of GT-Ps will turn them into either of the above, I'll stick to colour, not wheel, choices.

So, my secret plan was to paint the rims a totally different colour to anyone else - oiled bronze metallic. I sprayed a test patch (not on the wheel though) and from a straight on angle, it looks good - sort of a reddish black. But when light hits it, it turns more brown (to be expected, I suppose, seeing it is bronze!). Anyway, me being the chicken I am, I've have decided to go a more traditional colour on the rims. Well, maybe not traditional, but defintiely the "new chrome".

Might have some pics later tonight if I can get the garage up to a temp i can paint at.

just make sure you etch the wheels first if you have gone back to raw alloy

Ta, but haven't gone back that far - just scuffed the clear coat and previous painted surface.

Just a question on etch primer - can it be used on painted surfaces as well? I'm guessing it can, because otherwise you'd have to strip the whole panel etc if you were going to use it on a partial repair of a panel.

Once I have etch primed, I also hit it with primer/surfacer before applying top coat. With the VHT paint I am using, there is no need to prime at all (though it is recommended).

I've had varying success with etch over paint.. Every now and then it seems to fry and craze, other times it has been fine..

I get that with normal paint anyway (usually when poor prep work).

I'll just make sure i haven't gone back to alloy then!

etch primer is usually a mix of phosphoric acid , and that reacts with some paints depending how much they are alkaly based.

Looks great JC!!

And just too make a point, I dint even prime my wheels when I painted them and I took them back to raw alloy as well. I just used some combination kill rust/prime/make satin black an I've had no probs with them other than the paint being a little thin in areas due to my inability with a spray can!!

I reckon you shoul have gone te bronze but! It looks good... In my mind haha
