The wife and i are tossing up the idea of moving to W.A. We have relatives in Mandurah we can stay with. We had a holiday there in august and going on what we saw employment wise it might be a bit easier to get a start in the mines there then here in QLD.
Even people we spoke to who work around the Perth area seem to be earning good money. From what i have been told by employment agencies in W.A unless your are highly experienced in mining industry, employers are reluctant to employ you if your are based on the east coast.

Is there many mines down mandurah way and also if there are i imagine they are popular to work at being so close to the coast. But i suppose you could try for a FIFO from perth.

FiFO of perth is what i meant. But you can get well paying normal jobs around town if you work hard enough.

IF you are willing to move to Kal at least for a couple of weeks to get a start, get soe basic trainging and then perhaps go fifo out of perth should be quite easy to get work. Im looking at the Kal Miner now and Barrick Gold, Roche, Downer Edi, Monadelphous and BHPBiliiton are all advertising for apprenticeships in all sorts of things.

As far as being a drillers offsider goes the west australian has at least 10 positions advertised every week, so just get your resume sorted and focus on quantity! the more you send out the better.

Also getting your senior first aid certificate is always a bonus.

you'll be cashe up then with experience. Some of the pay in mining is insanely high.


The main thing that concern me about moving to a mining town is. When your car or air conditioner breaks down how long and what's it cost to fix.

Also if your sunglasses break do the local businesses try to extort $100 out of you for a pair of sunnies. How much does panadol cost there also.

I thought it was going the back way through eton and homebush and coming back out at sarina or something. like if u are driving from brisbane to townsville.

yeah i think there may be a shortcut through eton way...... i have never done that run so i normally just go out through walkerston to eton on the peak downs highway.

who knows......... maybe if you are travelling through mackay at peak hour

but if your travelling that big of a distance a couple of minutes longer and you just stay on the highway rather than taking backroads is better in my opinion

What is accommodation like in kalgoorlie? Is it readily available and what is the rent like?

Accomodation in Kal is a bit limited but there are single rooms for rent until you get yourself established. looking at about 250pw for a 3x1 in the rough end of town. So a share house is obviously the way to go.
