I love the latest Falcons.


Ok, that being said....



I was 16 when Mad Max was showing in the US. I fell in love with that car. It had American car lines to it but I could not identify it. Also, not knowing that the movie was filmed in Australia, because of the Yank dubbing, I thought the cars were made special for the movie since they were also RHD. The black Interceptor blew me away. It was the most amazing car I had ever seen, but I had to accept that I could never have a car like that since it was specially made for the movie.


That all changed in 2003 when I learned differently. Now I am building one.


Here is a picture of my Canadian friend's finished MM1 Interceptor.



I believe it is the best you will find. He has had the opportunity to meet the builder of the original, in person, to get critiquing. I hope my car is as nice as his when I get done with it.


And for those who would flame me, here is my Han Solo Blastech DL-44 blaster I made myself...



...from a die cast replica of a broomhandle Mauser C96 pistol. I machined the muzzle, grill, and scope mount from alloy myself, after figuring out what it looked like from extensive research. The scope is a Weaver K3 but I need a Compac Superscope to be accurate.


This is my Stormtrooper Blastech E-11 blaster that I made from a demilitarized (cut to pieces) British Sterling MK IV L2A3 submachine gun. I made it so it cannot be fired or be made to fire. I machined the fins on it from alloy, made the scope mount, and the scope is a real WW II M-38 tank scope.




So yeah, I am into movie replicas. I'll post pics of my lightsabres I made as well if you want. : Those are made from 1930's camera flashguns just like George (Lucas) used.

Replica movie props, I don't buy them, I make them.


BTW, my avatar is my car grafted with a Mad Max car front end in an editing program.

Hey, I know him. I remember when he came across the pond to get it. There are a number of really nice replicas in the world.

My buddy in Canada though is worse than I am on detail. He even replicated the flaws on the movie car. On the driver's side one of the zoomie pipes hangs lower than the other 3 in the movie, he did that. The driver's door lower back corner hangs just a little low in the movie, he did that. One of the 4 screws that holds the cover over the headlight came loose on the movie car and a 5th one was put in, and my buddy replicated that.

Pat also has a real nice Cobra as well.

IIRC, that was the mechanic Murray Smith. Did he get to see the pic's Murray had of the car before the movie was made? some where up his driveway and in his backyard.


Did your friend build this from scratch? the MFP sticker looks like it's from Gordon Hayes who built one of the earliest replicas.

I remember I had battery operated Han Solo Blaster and Stormtrooper blaster when I was 9...wish I still had them now, they'd probably get me an F6!

Yeah, I wasn't going to mention Murray's name. He got to sit and have dinner with him for 3 hours. They compared pictures. I don't know if he got to see the ones you mentioned.

Yes, he built his from scratch. I don't know the origin of the MFP sticker. He does have it on a magnetic sheet though, just like in the movie. I believe he had them made up locally.

I am also familiar with Gordon Hayes. While learning about building a replica I've stumbled into all those nuts that love this car.


Great pics everyone!!! I love seeing any pics I haven't seen before. Yes, Pat is a real stand-up guy.

I love the "Car Includes" features list, in bullet form listing the features, half way through it he mentions that the car includes "rust in every panel" - here I was thinking I'd have to pay for that.

Ohio XB I love your buddies interceptor, and by all accounts yours will be just as awesome if not better. Keep us informed of your progress please.

My car is actually in pretty good, maybe exceptional condition as these cars go. Yeah, I will be welding in some new metal but it doesn't appear to have any nightmares in it like you do find. We've had some absolute basket cases sent over to this side of the pond, cleverly hidden under an inch of bog! Ooops, cleverly hidden under 25.4 mm of bog!

For anyone interested, I did not want a real GT to build my car, I only wanted a suitable coupe in decent condition. It is actually a 1972 (October 72) XA that someone had put all the XB bits on. They did a really good job too, especially converting it from an auto to manual tranny. It was a Fairmont when built. It is an original 351C car with 9 inch diff. I think the diff is original (I haven't checked other than to see that it is a 9 incher) and the engine is not original to the car.

As for the parts I removed and am not going to be using I have sold them to a local guy that has an XB coupe and an XC Ute, so they are being put to good use. Anyone want a trailer hitch for free??

it looks great - i am being pedantic here but may also be assisting with useless info
it is an xa or very early xb - he says it is an xb
the verticle side repeaters on the quarters give it away as an xa-early xb shell
the vents in the door jambs means it is a very early xb at the oldest. i believe march 74 was when they stopped putting the vents in

Ah, I was looking at the front clip that is an XC, but yes, the body does appear to be an XB, or at least on his very first pic he calls it an XB.

it was pedantic, but it was also a way to let others know the difference between some of the shells

I will be getting the body media blasted in a month or two. I just need to remove the passenger door and left rear quarter window. I will be personally shooting it with epoxy primer myself afterwards. I am HOPING to have the car finished by the end of 2010. I have the body kit already as well as the blower, blower switch, zoomie pipes, and many other bits unique to the Interceptor.

This year I plan to have the metal work on the body done (myself). Getting up the money to have the kit put on (flares, spoilers) and having it painted is a big stumbling point for me. When I got the car (arrived 2004) there was plenty of overtime at work for us Toolmakers. There's been zero overtime since last summer and I switched to a new position with less overtime before that, so with the economy being in the tank I have to be creative about getting up funds for the body.

We've got a married son who has needed financial help, a daughter in college, and another daughter about to graduate high school, so there is a constant
draw on funds.

Has anybody built one of these with a "fully functional blower", or would that be detracting too much from the original....

The original operates on demand not constantly running while the engine does, I'd say it would be tough to replicate.

The easiest way may be run the blower off a few size "D" Duracell's for the authentic look. :

Couldn't you just bastardize an a/c compressor clutch to make it work on demand from the engine?

Currently, the only replica with a functional blower AND functional fuel injector belongs to Mark Scarseli in New York. The blower actually supercharges the engine, and the vintage looking Scott Superslot injector is a functioning EFI replica unit. There may be another or two with a functional blower but those would probably be carbed.


The switchable blowers that you see on replicas are non-functional blowers. It replicates the way the car functioned in the movie though. Yes, the blower can be switched on and off on the fly. Yes, the A/C compressor is involved. No, I don't want to go into great detail and ruin the "magic".

Was Googling Mad Max images this morning and came across this forum so I'd thought I'd resurrect this thread as I gave the hardtop a wash the other day and applied the first piece necessary for conversion to a pursuit special:
