O.k forgive me but I am confused.

1. do you guys in other states have to pay a fee for personalised plates? I was certain you just payed the initial $300+ and that was that.

2. Do you have to pay your insurance upfront at the time of rego? I pay my insurance fortnightly and it has **** all to do with my rego date.

I ask this as it seem very excessive, in W.A my Fairmont is $513.50 for the year, that is my licence and third party insurance policy, my Camry is a little less.

In NSW ALL personal plates ordered after about 2-3 years ago must pay a yearly fee of between $90 and around $430 pa.

Prior to this, some personal plates only attracted a once off creation fee and that was it (depending on the combination of letters / numbers you used).

Here is a ROUGH run down of how it is in NSW.

We have 4 (??) categories for Rego based on weight. Lowest is around $220, highest is... well perhaps $370-400.

Then you need CTP insurance. Without this paid in full you cannot register the car.

CTP has gone up a motza over the last few years. I remember paying $330 a few years ago, my last one was around double that.

Shopping round for CTP will save you bugger all as well.

Cars older than 5 years need an inspection, around $35.

So all up, most large cars / 4x4's would need to outlay a minimum of $800 to $1000 to get rego.

This is just off memory.

Victoria is a one off fee and you own them for life but SA is a yearly 'rental'.

I recently paid over 1000 recently for a 4 cylinder softroader. I though small engine cars were cheaper!

The 6 month rego option in NSW is worth a look, doesnt make it any cheaper but it helps with your cashflow. Problem is todays charges for 6 months rego is what you paid three years ago for a whole year.

The roads should be paved with gold given the revenue thats being raised, instead we get goat tracks.

Personalised plates here once you buy them they are yours, don't need to pay another cent. But they do range from about $395-2500.
Thats kind of why I was asking. $90 seemed low for personalied plates, but high for standard issue plates. After reading the rest of the thread, it appears in NSW you almost rent the plates?

The $30 I was referring to was the standard issue plates up here. Last time i got some they were under $30.

If you have to "rent" your plates, why on earth would you bother with personalised plates? When you hand them in will you get a nice big cheque?

Motor Vehicle rego is $390 vehicle tax + $56 registration fee + $90 plates.

Im sure they have snuck it up $100 from last year or maybe more.

That will drop the *** end out of cheaper used cars with little rego left. With Green slip (compulsory) the cost is $1000 now minimum.

My license also expired earlier this week, theres another $153 for the RTA. Another poke in the eye.
I got the exact same rego papers in the mail on Friday - seriously WTFBBQ going on there! Add to that that CTP renewal of $693.03 and I'm looking at $1229.03 to keep the BA on the road for the next year! Then add regular insurance of course but thats in July....

Here in Queensland, I just paid the registration on my '82 Celica...$625.45 for the year.

Last rego bill for my 2008 Suzuki GSX-1400 was...wait for it...$400.20 for 12 months...

Last bill for our six cylinder Landcruiser (traded in on our new G6E) was $783.20 for the year.

They do allow you to pay six months or twelve months now...which is a blatant admission that they know damn well they are charging people way too much and need to give people some sort of option to break up the bill. You can also get a little book and "pay it off" and when your rego comes, it is minus the amount paid beforehand.

Fricking criminal isn't it...especially the motorbike rego...

My late father used to say, when I started driving in 1982, that the difference between four, six, and eight cylinder cars was because "four cylinder cars are small and eights are big and it goes by the damage to the roads". I disagreed, pointing to the example of the Torana (4,6,and 8 versions), and also, at the time, the Commodore with also 4,6, and 8 cylinder versions in the same size car weighing not much more that each other up the range.
They had a 3 cylinder Diahatsu Charade in 1984, and my old man used to jokingly complain that he had to pay the same as a four cylinder when he had one less cylinder. That seems to have changed now, as we just bought our son a brand new Suzuki Alto, and it has a three cylinder engine...the guy informed us that in Queensland you get a $50 cut off your normal four cylinder rego for having three cylinders now...an incentive to get smaller cars apparently.

Wow, thats cheap for insurance.

I have not been quoted under 2500 for mine, and they will only insure it for 5k
For a while a lot of places wouldn't insure me at all, apparently extractors must add a gazillion rwkw's.

But these places would let me insure Dads GT if I wanted for 3000?? Go figure

Jees mate you're getting ripped for sure..i just recently got a few quotes.. green p plater with rating 4..ba mk 2 xls ute agreed value of $16k (which attracts a higher premium than an xr6 ute go figure) just car wanted $1360 a year with a $1000 excess (std + age excess) at the other end of the scale NRMA wanted $2350 a year, $1000 excess.

Yeah, my excess is something like $500 normal + $700 age excess (male under 22)
EDIT: I am going to do another one now I have just had my license over 1 year.
Will post back if its any different.

Double EDIT:
Seems driving for over a year with no problems has knocked it down to $1500

It's simple isn't it, if you own three cars and as you say can only drive one at a time then sell two and stop your whinging.

Otherwise just pay the rego and keep all three.

If you have a Health Care card in Vic, you can only claim a discount on one vehicle and I think its around $140 off the Rego.

The opposition will do nothing to change the cost of rego or fuel other than to incease them to 'encourage' us all to use public transport. Great in the centre of Sydney. Add carbon tax too.
Plus all state government's are' Capitol City centric' meaning they couldn't give a toss about regional areas that are being shafted anywhere up to 40c a litre to subsidise our city cousins for cheap days. Our roads are 40 years behind the times and in poor repair.
The NSW opposition knows they'll have the easiest run into power simply because the current government is beyond useless. They don't need to offer anything.
