All those previously tin foil hat predictions about one world GovCo and unified monetary currencies for particular 'blocs' seem to ringing true???! A South Pacific/South Asia currency?? Blah.

Remember talk of the "Amero"? Unified currency of US, Mexico and Canada. Can't see that happening, even if the US dollar devalues owing inflation bought about by mad Bernanke and the Feds desire to inflate real estate value though quantitiative easing (printing money).

I'll keep to Aussie dollarz......

They seem to wheel this old currency merger cheastnut out once every five years or so. They're looking at ways to enhance the Closer Economic Relationship agreement both countries have enjoyed for nearly 30 years now.

I think the CER thing is great, we can each buy the other coutries goods free to duty or tariffs of any kind, heck you guys can even enjoy our world class apples now

My thoughts are there has always been a very close relationship between N.Z. & Australia born from the support we've given each other over many decades. Its great the ANZAC spirit is so alive and well but a currency merger REALLY ?

This just isn't working in the Euro zone. The whole place is in a state of almost complete chaos. What more evidence do you need ? The idea is fundamentally flawed unless you have perfectly alligned social, economic, welfare and business systems and even if all these could be alligned at one point in time what about when there's a change of political party ? Is it being suggested that Canberra exert extremly heavy political influence in Wellington ? Surely not.

Lets be honest, the Euro thing is a complete mess..why would we as countries want to make the same fundamental mistake. Currencies are meant to float, its clear Greece and Spain need a massive devaluation at present but they can't because they're ties to the Euro.

The system isn't broke so why fix it. Each counties heritage is rich and diverse and we each deserve to retain our own unique cultures, political systems and YES currency.

Cant see Fonterra agreeing to a higher valued currency...and they would have a bit of influence over there just at a guess.

Where did he say he hates Australia....????

Somebody points out a few discrepancies and they become a hater.....

It seems to be a popular theme these days that if you are not a flag waving nut job with your head in the sand, then quite obviously you hate the place........so get out!!!!

The currency could have a picture of a Sheep riding on the Kangaroo's back. Quite fitting and more G rated than a Roo standing close behind a sheep.

Merger? Australia is too big to be one country/continent anyway. WA or NT should split off and form their own country, would make things a bit more interesting.

Now go back to school and ask what the preamble in section 6 was about.

It gave NZ the ability to join the Commonwealth of Australia at any time, IT HAS NEVER DONE SO.

Me thinks someone has "read into" Section 6 toooo much...

Have to agree with Flappist,

Quote:
A Seventh Australian State?

More independence was asserted in 1901 when the colony of New Zealand refused to join Australia as its seventh state. In 1890 the representatives of seven British colonies (New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand) had met for the Australasian Federation Conference in Melbourne, agreeing in principle to establish a federation. However, a Royal Commission on Federation, established in 1900 to inquire into the issue, concluded that there were few benefits for New Zealand in joining the Commonwealth of Australia, and advised: “New Zealand should not sacrifice her independence as a separate colony, but that she should maintain it under the Political Constitution she at present enjoys.”
ties in with the aussie constitution which says:
Quote:
... and such colonies or territories MAY BE admitted into, or established by the Commonwealth as states....
NZ was never a "state" of Australia
