Very nice car. If you have a nice Merc you have to dump it on nice rims. They are a cruiser and if you want to go quickish you still can.

That looks awesome.. nice clean and elegant. I'm a big fan of dished wheels but i really like those Lorinzers, they look like fan blades.

Wheels make or break a car - my mates dad replaced the multispoke 18s on his SL55 with 20" Brabus wheels and it absolutely set it off. Looks like its doing 300kph just sitting there in the garage.

It would appear that you have driven neither.

The Charger has bigger grin factor.

Slower? Naturally. Archaic? You bet. More fun? Oh hell yes.

Don't masturbate over best buddies daddies car just because of the price. They handle like wet sponges and the steering is hideous. It takes more than quick and expensive to make an intriguing drive.

I've driven a few, also SL55 and 65.

E55's are hugely powerful naturally, and that at first is a massive blast. The power is turbine like from down low and they just keep pulling. Incredible engine.

The steering is vague at best at straight ahead and is wooden feeling, providing little to no feedback. Couple this with suspension that I can only describe as floaty, and you have a vehicle in which once the initial kick from the amazing powerplant dies away, is dull to drive. Yes, they are dull. Massively competent, comfortable and fast, but no fun at all.

It has to be said, the Benz/AMG engineers are aware of these criticisms and acknowledge that the car is not the pinnacle of a drivers vehicle, this is how they want it; the car is designed for executive express duties up and down smooth American freeways, while keeping the occupants cossetted. More power to them, they know their market and the car is a raging success. However, this vehicle is not and will not ever be the driver's car all and sundry seem to want it to be.

The E55 is an amazing piece of machinery, and the best in the market in the role it is intended for, the fact that this designated role is not as an intriguing or challenging sports sedan is probably only a loss to those like me who enjoy driving, rather than been seen a car. I'm quite sick of seeing it purported as something it is worlds away from, by people who have sat in one while the eager owner shows off the impressive torque curve, or worse, those who have only seen one pass by in Double Bay or Toorak.

Interesting assesment and well worded. But as you mentioned it was designed as an open hwy car or an autobarn blaster. 2 ton of brute power and luxury was never designed for twisties but having said that I'm sure it will hold its own compared to some of it's rivals in its class. The current models have an awesome brake package that will ensure you pull 2 ton of car up with confidence.

I'd have one parked next to the XY anyday. If i wanted to go fast around corners I'll take out my WRX instead ;)

you cant compare different era's... steering boxes or no steering aid vs racks is hardly comparable

only reason i posted up this pic was because of its image and it is damn FINE , not a discussion on how it would corner :P

Please show me where in my post I mention anything about grin factor or going around corners. My comment was "line them both up"..

Forgive me but I would rather make that call based on my own experiences with the car and the owners 17,000km worth of feedback. As far as i'm concerned you cannot make an accurate assesment of a cars abilities by manouvering them around the hoist at your Mercedes dealership.

Fine for a race vehicle that only runs on smooth tracks, close to dangerous on a road going vehicle.
And you have expertise in this field I take it then??

Its funny how your first line is what this whole thread it actually about
"...give it looks which while aesthetically pleasing..."

Just accept that both the wheels and lowered suspension make this Merc : : which is what was originally posted...

E55s do look amazing in that silver though. Both types of E55 :

You get used to the steering as it does differ from other cars, all the mercs are the same, speaking as an ex-merc owner. They are fantastic cars. This is one of the cars on my list for purchase, looked at one last time and brought the F6 instead, but mabey next time.

I love Mercs, I guess I'm the only one who thinks that looks crap. I'd consider that completely "butchered" - then again, I've never seen the appeal in extremely low cars in general and think they ruin the look of the car.

Very nice Merc though :sm_drool:

it's obvious most people love it, and that's great just my 2c

Great stance but comprehensively impractical!

Anything with an AMG badge is totally spankworthy (although I'd need to be a bit more convinced with the ML and R-class variants!) Saw my first "63" variant cruising the Gold Coast highway, which I consequently stalked for a km or so, and I must say that they sound genuinely sensational under load, as did their older "55" siblings.

Why?
An E55 is expensive enough, why cheapen it with "fully sick uleh" lowering jobs and bling bling rims.
I'm sorry to go against the grain here but anyone driving that would get the same response from me; "What a ****er".

Its not about expense, its about being different. You can spend $600K on a Lamborghini Murcielago and it'll still look exactly the same as the neighbours. Its about being different and original

Well whether if its about being a individual or different, Having really deep pockets or just to show who has the bigger d*ck it seems to be more and more of a growing trend.

Where i live i see at any age group, people who drive lexus, merc, bmw and suv's all have one thing in common there cars have big inch rims, the rear ends are slammed to the ground and the drivers looking pretty LOL.

Maybe people are stepping down from go and concentrating on the show, either way with cars its just personal preference.
