have a look how successful the winternats are at willow bank alcohol free.. you cant tell me that they could not make the Nat's alcohol free.. before anyone jumps on me i love a beer in fact i drink no matter what i do but i would easily give it away for the wend if it meant my wife could walk peacefully around the grounds.. last year i almost had a bit of a punch on with a dude over it and being a guy that has a short temper and enjoys a friendly knuckelup I'm surprised that even i think it's a bit pathetic really..

ban the grog it'll be a better place by far..

Problems with an alcahol free events are many...
I have done some similar car type events as a licenced guard in QLD and NSW, and some of the issues faced are.....

The worst/biggest issue for organisers is the loss of alcahol related revenue.
These grounds cost thousands of dollars to hire even for just a day. Entry fees cover most items like entrants packs and then depending on if good attendance by entrants/public, all of the ground costs/security M.C's, staging gear etc.
Followed closely by the cost of many decent security guards to stop alcahol and other contraband gettin into the 'compound' by either entrants, spectators and even some exibitors.
People smuggling it in via cars is a problem as search laws are an obstacle.
Spectators bags can be searched, but not their person. Cars are an alltogether diffrent problem with searches.
A place the size of summernats would require truck loads of guards to effectivly cordon off people smuggling things into the 'compound', and this would cost tunns of $$, as most sane guards prefer to avoid crowd control work, unless paid very well.

These people need to make a profit for these events to go ahead on a regular basis, and people like that chick henry have made plenty from the summernats concept, but I seriously doubt it if the event would be financially viable without the alcahol.

In any event, I have never been to the summernats, have NO aspiration to go, as 4VMAN has said about orig type cars, same here, it isnt really my cup of tea. I prefer events like the GT Nationals and Valla as they are much more relaxed, alcahol isnt an over riding factor in the whole thing, and the people are mostly all good and easy going without the dedicated hooligans to spoil the weekend because they wanna get wasted at some car show. We drink too, but not to get sh!t face wasted just for the sake of it.

Just my thoughts.

Donny, as you know we also hold Factory Musclecar shows here with all 3 brands represented and only quiet byo "social" drinking occurs at the end of the day, there's kids, mothers, fathers girlfriends etc, all having fun, no problems, no issues, just relaxed fun like the GT Nationals. Entry fee covers the cost of the facilities.
When you start including wet T Shirt comps, burnout comps etc and SELLING alcohol i guess you attract a "different" demographic of spectator...

Quite right. I love a good social drink as much as any normal aussie. I love a good flesh show too, and allways get awesome value when I work Indy. (Thanks Coopers/Bacardi and a few others...LOL)

In nearly every job I work at, as soon as alcahol is sold at shows on licenced premises, there is allways one person who stuffs it for everyone else, they either wanna smuggle their own, or get too full and clown around.

I did new years here on the Gold Coast this year, and I only was closly involved with 2 out of the 150 plus arrests made, and they were idiots who basically gave lip to the cops, while blatantly drinking in public on the beach in front of them. The whole thing was supposed to be a family oriented no alcahol zone bar the clubs etc, but the amounts of booze that was either smuggled onto, or blatantly brought onto the beach was out of control, and the 150 cops on duty that night had their hands full everywhere most of the night, and had no chance of controlling the situation. Neither did the 30 or so of us, who's powers are limited by the law.

I know all the GT related events I have attended are real good value, the drinking is social, there is a family prescence there too, and the mood is allways good even among the few people who would not normally get along together. When the H@lden and Mopar's turn up, they are fine too, a lot of them are in the same situation with families etc, and the closer to factory, less modified muscle era cars appeal to me much more than the stuff at summernats.

If you all dont want alcohol there, why dont every single one of you go up, get wasted then do something really stupid? Then theyll make it alcohol free!

i voted that i'd like it to be alchy free. i would love to go, and my dad would want to come with me, as long as a few mates. that way we can drink and dad can drive. but i find it awkward to walk along with dad, looking at cars that have tits hanging out....

They make cars go faster than the speed limit so i can't see why having alcohol at a car show any different.Alcohol brands are a major sponsor on some Touring cars also.I don't mind if alcohol was banned but it's a great way to enjoy the day,as i don't like soft drinks.

I have not been to Summernas but have been in Canberra a few times for rowing camp when the show is on. From what I say outside the venue it would be wiser to have an alcahol free show. And yes I do drink.

I definately voted yes
99% of these drunken idiots havent even got a decent car so they simply dont respect others .
The last time i was there i had to help out a gut with a phrase 3 ( remember the dark blue burnout king from the early days HO 775 ) all he was trying to do was drive to his tent area that was shared with gary meyers and all these mullet heads were trying to lift his rear guards to encourage him to do a burnout .
To see a well respected car to be treated like this after he was invited back to the show for a burnout display fired me up and i dragged these idiots off his car and he later thanked me .He was really panicing as he was realling fearing for his car.
And then theres the 3 hour line up to get in with no toilets provided at the queing up area and once in the complex people offer you some sun lotion after being burnt to a crisp already.
And canberra at the moment is a gigantic dust bowl like the last 5 years so when you park expect to go back to a red dusty car.

The sydney car festival at rose hill gardens(booze free) leaves the nats for dead and yes you can take a girlfriend or family there and be in PEACE

i enjoy a drink or 2, but id go again if the p1ss, and anybody with it, was given the boot for the whole place, inside natex AND out!!
as i wrote, i enjoy a drink, but can easily go without to enjoy other things, like grog-free events.
it amazes me that, while i admit i havent read EVERY post in this thread, so i'm not having a go at anyone on here, people in this day and age still carry on about an event of any type being a 'dry event' and that they wont go coz theres no grog...
but i guess its them that misses out in the end.

the grog is the 1 reason that ive only been once... faaaaaaaaaar to many d/h's with no interest in cars, they have a skin full and cause all the trouble that the decent CAR people are held responsible for by simple being tarred with the same brush...
is it any wonder that the elite cars in this country are under lock and key while the p1ss is about...

The reason I haven't gone yet, is because i'd want to go with my girlfriend (as she wants to too), but i'd be worried about her with all the dickheads around.

I think the loss of drink profits would be made up for in extra people attending, and there's other ways of making money other than alco, it's a place for cars afterall.

Seriously, I like my drinking, a lot (probably too much), but it's the main reason I haven't gone yet.

Maybe just the one night with limited drinks?

I've heard too many similar stories, especially about the knobs not having a descent car, and not respecting others.. And when the thing is meant to be about cars, makes you wonder.

Well I'm a female and I have been to summernats twice. The first time I went I was taunted and harrassed and I left with my friends straight away (I was in a group of 3 chicks though). The second time I went I was with a group of blokes and it was fine. I got told 'show us your tits' once the whole day so it was good.
I was going to go to the nats tonight but decided not to because I thought there would be too many drunk people!
I went for a cruise in the ute with my BA this alvo and on the way out to civic there was a holden brigade all with their summernats entrant stickers on. 2 VL's (1 V8 and 1 Turbo nissan VL) and a newer model clubsport (Not heaps new just newer than VL) and we had a bit of a go and the BA ute smoked them all. But I noticed that all the passengers in these cars had an alcoholic drink in their hands. They were pretty nice guys though cause we gave them **** about having such a loud exhaust and not being able to beat a stock BA.

It would be so much better if the bars simply didnt open till 4pm.

That way you can relax after the days events and enjoy the night shows with a clensing ale or 2.

I am competing this year and its a s h i t fight to get anywhere after lunch with the drunken knobs about, and i have not seen anyone breath tested before competing in any events.

Light Beer works for most other venues, having just got back from SN 20 its just too crowded, Trying to look at the top 60 was near imposible, and once the afternoon comes you can hardly walk around.

That's absolute bullshit.

You're right in saying that most of the idots don't have a decent car or have no real interest in the quality cars, other then just having a **** up and there for the boobs.

Anyway after coming back from the Nats today, the entire 3 days I was there, I only had 3 JD slushies. I was there for the cars, not the booze.
