From the XA the Aussie Falcon was all Aussie - albeit with yank styling influences (or euro, in the case of the XD's Granada look, and the EA "face" styling phase). But you can see by the end of each generation since the XA, the styling became more uniquely Aussie - the marked difference of the EL compared to anything Ford global, and the BA too.

The only variation to that was the FG-X, where it was "morphed" from the uniquely Aussie FG styling (with the exception of some grille shapes shared with Euros), into the latest Mondeo & Mustang style to keep the "family" look.

The AU would have been worse than the mid-90s Taurus if Aussie Falcons were yank hand-me-downs, and we certainly wouldn't have had (arguably) the very pleasant looking XF, EF/EL, BA & FG models that we did.

I agree . So many American comments re the look of the later Falcons revolve around genuine keen appreciation of them . Many YT comments are like
"You Aussies know how to build a car". or "Why can't we have this in the U.S." etc . FG is a particular favourite , especially the GT-P and GT-F.

The thing to take out of this statement is ......how important it is to keep up with those regular visits to the opticians

Maybe agree to disagree rather than pursue this line further?

A lot of late Commo's were V8's. Don't see this appealing to V8 buyers no matter how fast it goes around corners. It's probably a good car. But looks bland in my eyes. None of these comparisons would likely happen if they'd simply chosen another name....

Thanks for getting things back on track.

The thread's about the new Commodore - which looks look a big step backwards from the model it is replacing - and the usual culprit(s) are busy attacking the FG-X again

I work for an American company. I was lucky enough to take one yank for a spin in the media GT-E in 2010. Then the FPV representative showed us how to get the most out of it. He thought he was going to vomit!
Then he started working out the costs of buying one, and shipping it back to the states. He asked some pretty serious questions about the RHD components too.
Today - he drives a Roush enhanced Mustang.

I've also taken several other yanks on decent trips in my FG, and they all loved it. One couldn't believe the torque of the 4L, and insisted on checking "under the hood" for a V8 or hidden turbo. I'd love to see his reaction to a G6ET. One of the others was amazed that "propane can go so well" - it's LPi.

All of them lamented the loss of RWD sedans in the US - cars they grew up with as kids and loved. Most of my contacts over there live in the less congested areas and drive the large "trucks" like F150s or truck-based SUVs like Suburbans, but some are reliving the RWD V8 dream, albeit with 2 doors - with cars like 4th Gen Camaros, a 70s El-Camino with an LS1, and the aforementioned Mustang. Only one was lucky enough to pick up a G8 for the right price, and loves it. He complained the Chevy SS was way overpriced for their market, despite it's credentials & performance.

Totally agree. I'm done with it. The ones I own are all V8s spanning 30 years, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Ironically I got an email today from Holden offering an extension of staff pricing out to suppliers. Does not interest me one bit. But I was tempted to email back & ask for the price on a V8 Calais V

The V8 was certainly popular with private buyers - some of the stats we were told from sub-tier suppliers (who could compare V8 to V6 components they were supplying) saw the % mix of V8s increasing more & more over the last couple of years. Without those private V8 sales, they probably would have had to close up sooner. I don't see many of them considering a V6 AWD as a suitable replacement - especially if Kia or Hyundai start offering a V8.

Good old GMH Australia isn't squeaky clean either. They have been bastardising their models for years. Go back to the very first Holden that was bulit in 1948. The FX. Where did the Design of the FX Holden came from? You guess it GM America.

The commodore will most likely be a decent car in its own right, and I'm picking is going to sell better than many of us think.
But that market will be a different market to existing commodore buyers.

Wrong. From the XA model the Falcon was an Australian design with very few hand me downs from the Yanks.

Designed in an American studio, by the same team who designed the VF valiant.
V8 engines lines were imported,then made here.
The HO engine was to be continuously imported.
The coupe was designed by an Englishman, then they didn't sell, which happens with coupes in Aus.

The XD was an XC with Granada styling in top.

I highly doubt it will sell at all. V8's made up 45% of sales in the last few years, and with no ute, LWB, manual trans etc I can't see why anyone would be interested in one. Especially when fleet sales will pretty much disappear (government ones especially with no buy Australian criteria).

And it looks so boring and uninspiring. I'd be surprised if it could even sell 800-1000 a month.
