Hey Denny,

How would you describe the turbo kicking in? Was it enough to give you a nice big shove back into the seat?

They aren't like a turbo hatch of old with lag lag, lag then bang and you're off, not even the XR5 was like that.

They will be very linear in the power delivery I dare say. I can give you a report when mine arrives in a few weeks.

Having driven one at the launch, I'd have to say that if you didn't know it was turbocharged then you wouldn't know. Power delivery was seamless and strong throughout the range and it didn't matter where in the power band you were - it was just a case of push and go (hard).

Cheers

Yes and no IMO.
I enjoyed the linear power delivery of my car in standard form, but now its tuned it is still linear but the shove in the pants is much more aggressive. I still like to feel the shove that a turbo car provides.

I went to drive one today, but alas the car that was there was sold.

I think Russel describes it best " Power delivery was seamless and strong throughout the range and it didn't matter where in the power band you were - it was just a case of push and go (hard)."

Its not like theres a big turbo lag and then it smashes you. Its more linear across the whole range but it sure does have some pull.

12L/100 vs less than 8L/100 for a comparative power figure with a heavier car that comes poorly equipped.

I know what my pick would be... the st also doesn't sound like chewbacca taking a dump

One thing I noted from my test drive (decent one on the highway) the fuel economy is not as good as the sticker suggests... 50/05 and I was sitting at 12 / 100...

True fuel eco figures don't normally appear until the engine is broken in, at least 3,000km on small non turbo motors (from my own experience, may differ) and of course will in reality always be a little higher than factory claimed figures.

To be fair, if you're getting the claimed eco figure in a performance oriented vehicle (as performance as you can get with a focus or wrx...) you're doing it wrong, the subie would be showing at least 16L/100 with that funky AWD.

From my research, the published figures are:
2012 ST, 7.4l/100
2012 WRX, 10.4l/100
2012 GTI, 7.7l/100
2012, Mazda 3 MPS, 9.9l/100

Yeah the subie will like a drink depending on whats its doing. Have spoken to a few people who have them and they will suck it down the harder you press the go pedal.

But it does have some nice power figures.
I personally cant stand the interior but the outer shape looks nice enough.
The mrs still loves em, still trying to win her over on the ST:

- better on fuel
- better standard equipment
- newer technology
- IT A FORD!
- real world performance useable on the street
- 6sp manual
- RECAROS!

Her arugment (which im having a hard time disagreeing with):

- Seats are just as good as recaros
- more power out of the box (meaning less time before i will get sick of it)
- Boxer rumble (really cant argue with that, love the rumble!)
- AWD
- Interior may be lacking but it can fit a double din unit...
- Upspec model is now going for 45k and includes full leather and sat nav
- aftermarket parts (considering she hates it that i spend money on cars i find it funny she is pointing this out).
- she prefers the look of the subie over the ST where as i think the ST dosnt look that bad in person.

What really won my mrs over was when we test drove the wrx was that she able to shift it beautifully and wasnt scared to put the power down and she really loved the turbo rush as did i. This is startling as usally power + manual with my mrs = curb (its possible the amount of grip the car generates had something to do with this as well due to the fact that when we drove the xr6t she was drifting all over the place like it was a causal day in Tokyo).

So it doesnt come with rear wheels and tyres?? Jokes aside I have a question, how do you do a push start with a push button ignition, is it possible? Not that I have had to do one of them since my 78 escort.

It's only the American models that come with a subwoofer, ours are only a 9 speaker system - the 9th speaker is behind the gauge binnacle on top of the dash.

Corner lights aren't the same as fog lights either. The headlight cluster has extra bulbs which illuminate as you go around corners, essentially lighting up more of the road.

I've worked out a best case fuel range with nanna driving

62 (tank capacity in litres) divided by X (unknown range) multiplied by 100 (standard economy milestone) = 7.4 (Litres consumed per 100km)

X = 837.8 kilometers before you have a bone dry tank.

note: based on manufacturer claimed average economy. I'd expect to shave off 100km of range to allow for realistic world usage and the fact that you are required to fill before the tank is completely drained.

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. I'm guessing the subwoofer connection will still be there in the back of the console to hook one up without too much effort?

I don't know actually to be honest.

The Americans run a different head unit with a touch screen, so the loom may be different. I think they may also run an auxiliary amp as well...

The stereo in the upper spec LW Focus's is decent though, I personally wouldn't worry about one - it's only going to cut down on boot space.

Yeah I wasn't too worried myself to be honest. Never bean in to the whole doof doof thing...

On another note, I was curious about how beastly this would look in matte black.

Done by a place called Mustang Manny in the states

Would the larger american screen be interchangeable with the **** small screen that comes fitted to the ST? I thought that it was maybe only that small for the prototype at the motorshow but after some extra digging around it would appear that Ford think an ipod size screen recessed in the dash is big enough..

Can always rely on the seppos to ruin a decent car, every American take ive seen on the ST looks rubbish. Under the bonnet might be different though.

No it won't be, its a totally different headunit and dash panel etc.

The MyFord Touch system is supposed to be a POS anyway. Google it and look at how many complaints there are.

The 5" system as fitted to our vehicles functions well even if a touch small.

Side note - If you're looking at the screen... you're driving it wrong.

But if the system is constantly locking up, freezing and buggy like MFT allegedly is then it isn't much use either.....

God i hope you guys dont want a nice note from your ST. Ive been following some manufacturers that made exhausts for the Mk2 ST to see what they have done with the new one and havnt found a nice note yet. Ive heard GTi's that sound better. It is early daes though and hopefully something nicer sounding comes up.

have also heard the same thing on the uk st forums - it would appear that it is proving extremely difficult to get a decent note out of current ST.
