Melbourne has managed to transition from floating cruise ship incubators to vertical bricks and mortar incubators. Not sure how wise it is to quarantine so many people in dense housing as well as having the cops stationed on every floor of every building.

If C19 takes hold in these building it would surely spread throughout the building much like it spread within Ruby Princess.

At the rate I've seen the exodus of Tassie caravannerrs coming out of Melbourne, we will see what happens when they need to return.

Qld would be better off not letting any southern states enter.

Victoria made the mistake of taking in ~50% of international arrivals. The hotel quarantine breach could have happened anywhere, you can't stop someone from breaching protocols. I don't buy the whole "training" bs, it doesn't take a trained staff to know you shouldn't be shagging people that are under quarantine, then going home and attending mass indoor gatherings. PPE is an issue but I doubt that it was the main contributor from what I am hearing, but we'll wait on the inquiry.

Touch wood, the current rise in cases are mostly just mild cases, a lot asymptomatic. Only one death. The gov is doing what is necessary to contain.

The fed is cunning. See what they did with NSW (coincidentally a Lib state). They put a cap on arrivals, 450 a day, 50 per flight. How many airlines can afford to only put 50 passengers on an overseas flight? It is a smart way of telling airlines to land elsewhere. QLD will cop the brunt of it I imagine. Come election time in a couple of years it will be "look what Labor did".

This is a national problem that needs to be tackled, rather than turning it into state bashing. Imagine if Hanson and Dutton got what they asked for, open borders.......

Professor Mary-Louise McLaws of the University of NSW told news.com.au authorities needed to consider bringing in tougher measures, and this included looking at how people who tested positive were treated.

“Many Australians don’t live in homes where they can be easily isolated from the rest of the family,” she said.

“We need to think whether we need to move them out of their homes and move them into a facility so they don’t continue to spread the virus among family clusters.”
Yeah, I’ll pass thanks.

Imagine if it got into Southbank:

Its 1.7km2 and has 18,000 people living within that tiny suburb which has a huge part of it is Crown Casino

I wonder if the Government would lock it down in such a way that they did with the USSR towers or the wealthy would kick back over it?

Bearing in mind most of the people who live in those towers are foreign students or young professionals renting.

Except I don't smoke I don't have HIV, I do have several types of cancer, which puts me in the high risk group, oh and I wasn't pregnant last time I looked.

But I can catch the covids, REALLY easily. So for teh probably 4 million Australians who are in the high risk groups if the covids really got loose LOTS of us would die.

Yeah I've not seen a rational answer to that either, but IMO the real problem is you are assuming someone somewhere is smart and organised enough to run a scam. From what I've seen most of our politicians and public servants can't figure out where to wipe the toilet paper.

Looking at history the Spanish Flu pandemic ran from 1918-1919 when it ended, I'm expecting a similar timeline for COVID-19.
Why would you think that ? It's an entirely different virus, not just a variation of the SF, it's a whole other family. It's just as likely it'll come back every year or 2 in a new mutated form. It could literally do anything.

I’m yet to see a nursing home with armed police patrolling the corridors.

Why don’t they call it what it is - temporary incarceration? I can’t see it going very well. Riots and fires would be risks.

Saw a comment on today's Age livestream saying that quarantine will be passed on to flight attendents. May still be possible to pull the big R then.

Actually those towers aren't USSR.

They are an exact version (right down to the pebble rendering plates) of the UK Public Housing Ministry towers.
The Russians would have built them next to a coal power station...

The architect who built those Flemington towers, as well as the South Melb, Richmond,Port melb and Prahran towers is my childrens grandfather and my father in law.
He died being ashamed of them...."we built ghettos" he said.

Most towers are 18 floors with 3 wings, 36 units per floor.
laundry facilities are communal on every floor.

That's why they require so many police...every floor...every wing.

Lots have jumped off and died...lots and lots.

Anyone who is familiar, what is the building layout? Does each apartment have a shared HVAC plenum with all the trunking in the roof space? Single plant rooms near roof? Or is airflow simply windows on each?

I hear ya Guzzis3 - leukaemia related condition here. Letting this get into cancer wards (or to patients via the outside society) would be catastrophic. Have met so many good and brave people there - not all old either. And quite a few survive! Good luck to you mate, I mean that.

I think if they just let it go I'd go be next door neighbor to Old Ben Kenobi on the other side of the Dune Sea. Would need a good sand speeder to get to treatment and back, rifle for the sand people, + full PPE. If the hospital had any time for me that is, given that ICU would be over-run (see: Houston) and docs and nurses dying like overseas too, which has been documented.

Absolutely they're ghettos on Racecourse Rd, its a disgrace that's 4km north of Melbourne CBD in prime real estate - that land would be worth into 8 figures and not starting with a 1 either.

I guess back when they were designed and built it would have been a huge project though and a big social program, unfortunately today its a terrible mark on Melbourne.

Personally I think they're overdue for replacement and replaced with something modern, I'm sure the people living in them would appreciate new facilities.

Knock em over, sell the land build new apartment complexes out in the outer suburbs of Melbourne and move the residents there, everyone wins they get new accommodation, government capitalises on its massive land value that these towers are all on, developers can do a huge new apartment precinct and we can do it all over again in 2070 when the outer suburbs of Melbourne become very desirable suburbs 50 years later and Melbourne has a population of 20 million people

Alternatively we can rename it from Debneys Park to Little Sao Paulo and Melbourne Favela and actually admit we have a slum in the inner suburbs

Here's a photo of the ones on Racecourse Rd in Flemington - look at them they're bloody disgusting.

See all the graffiti on the bridge on the bottom right of the photo, the whole part of the suburb is trashed like that, its a wasteland with the Bolte Bridge right cutting right through immediately before this photo.

*car was on auto-pilot at time of photo

Check out this link, close off the COVID19 junk, this is the website for the Alexander Lombard tower which is a large apartment complex built in the area, its in a small suburb called Travancore literally around the corner from the USSR towers

https://www.altsienna.com.au/

You can see the USSR towers in the video on the website in the background.
