15 new cases yesterday for Australia (11 in NSW) and 5 deaths so the CMR is up to 1.319% although the active case percentage did drop to 14.7%.

2 new cases for New Zealand and zero deaths so the CMR drops to 1.289%.

Bad news for the UK after they finally added the aged care related COVID19 deaths (approx 3,900) which raised the CMR to 15.795% which surpasses the previous high held by Belgium to be the worst of the statistically significant countries.

The USA had under 20k new cases, the best it's been for awhile but almost 2,500 deaths so the CMR rose to 5.722%.

In other words, the time for complacency isn't here yet. Russia will likely pass the 100k case mark today and the USA now has almost a third of all cases globally.

No doubt the USA has many cases, but I think the individual members of the EU should be treated as one combined statistic - they are after all forever harping on about being United.

You'll find the EU is way ahead of the USA in deaths/cases.

We are all in this together. Everyone.

Pending a vaccine (18 months? never?) or controlling medication (timeframe???) our best bet to manage covid 19 WHILE also opening up Australia so that people will then have money to spend on those tradesmen and self employed is to do a multi approach of testing/distancing AND tracing which the COVIDSAFE app will be incredibly useful enabler.

Those people who have no employment or are very reliant on business opening up (like hospitality, self employed, tradesmen) or have limited cash reserves/mortgages and have work that has been put into hibernation- they are the ones who should be pushing the COVIDSAFE app and should be kissing the governments butts for being so proactive and rolling this out.

Personally I have never been busier in my life but my family and I have loaded this app. Because the personal privacy cost of my data being kept for 28 days showing what other phone I was in proximity for over 15 minutes is such small fry as to be laughable as compared to the benefits.

Its what a logical ethical person does to help society when that society is facing a Pandemic of 1 in 100 years.

And you laugh and white ant one of our best shots presently available that will enable our society to re-open business and get some sense of normality- while keeping covid 19 morbidity rates in control.

Wake up- Australia and the World is now in a very different reality to what we had 5 months ago- and it may be a long time for us to get back to some semblance of what it was like before Covid 19.

You're a hypocrite who talks out of both sides of your mouth.

We're all in this together, yet you've never been as busy as you are now? You are just like everyone else who is not affected financially or emotionally with the loss of an income or incomes and piling mountains of debt. You sound just like the people who make these decisions, the politicians and government workers who are completely unaffected financially while destroying the lives of millions, based on a virus which 95% of the population will get over without any major complications.

Get off your high horse, you're attitude is disgraceful. Show some empathy for those who are about to or have lost everything.

Tell me, why has the government sank millions for additional funding for the domestic violence helpline and lifeline?

Fortunately for me, I'm like you, I get to sit in my ivory tower not affected what so ever but do have empathy for those who've lost lives and lost jobs.

Media needs to pipe down and let the pollies sort it out. Get through the CV19 stuff and then start an investigation.

Sloppy on our part not to have a couple of other countries atleast join in the chorus at the same time.

In saying that we need to stand firm, stick to facts, and let them make fools of themselves.

Yep we should have had countries willing to publically declare support before sticking our necks out otherwise the pressure just won't be there.

Like you said stand firm, be objective about it and be prepared to call their bluff if we have to. I suspect it will all fizzle it out though.

Let's not let facts get in the way of a good hypothesis.

Since when is the EU a country? It's not. I've separately listed the continents but for those not paying attention here is that graph currently.

This compares percentage of global population with percentage of cases and percentage of deaths.

The key takeaways:

Europe has a 21.4% higher population base than North America.

North America is rapidly closing the gap to Europe for number of cases and will pass them in the next week or so even though you'd expect Europe to be 21% higher.

In terms of cases per 100k of population, Europe is at 185.2 and North America at 197.2 so whatever way you cut it their case rate is higher.

Europe does have twice the number of deaths that North America has so in that sense their performance is worse. The rate per 100k is 17.9 for Europe and 11.5 for North America.

Both are underperforming in terms of infections although Europe is worse. North America has 7.4% of the global population but 35.6% of the cases and 29.2% of the deaths. Europe has 9.5% of the population but 42% of the cases and 58.5% of the deaths.

South America is about level in terms of cases with 5.4% of the population and 5.1% of the cases and ahead in deaths with only 3.55%.

Africa, Asia and Oceania are all well ahead of the curve. Africa has the least cases per 100k (3.06) followed by Asia (11.06) and Oceania (21.73).

The order is slightly altered for deaths per 100k with Africa (0.13) still leading ahead of Oceania (0.282), Asia (0.398) and South America (1.91).

The problem is there isn't capacity in our hospitals for 5 % of the population to all land there in a short space of time.

You then end up with hospitals having to play God as they have to prioritise their services.

I know they do but China are trying to paint this as a politcal attack from the US and Australia to cover our own failings (while ignoring their own) which is why they have their back up.

If we had at least the G8 countries or even better the G20 unified on this then the pressure is much more.

No on this I am not a hypocrite.

We are all in this together.

My personal situation- the breakdown is in my immediate family 3 of my household have suffered significant financial impact as a result of Covid 19, with significantly reduced work for 2, and inability to acquire work for the 3rd in her area due to this virus.

I am the only one who to date has not been impacted on. This is because my work NOW is based on what was going on some 1.5 to 2 years ago in the economy.

However, I will be significantly impacted in 1.5 to 2 years from March 2020 and will have significant work reduction then based on the shutdown that occurred back then.

Everything is connected.

So it is in my interests for the Australian marketplace to open up asap and things like Covidsafe are an exceptionally important tool to enable this.

We obviously have different perspectives which are clearly laid out in our respective posts, evidencing what ethics and morality and compassion we have for society- both in terms of keeping the Australian Covid 19 mortality rate down for the old and vulnerable and for keeping the economy open and pumping.

B8, that sounds like an excellent idea for a complete new thread. Someone posts something and then people guess the identities of the likers.

E.g. Francoliscious Cozzo posts something about his ambition to be a dirty old man and we guess who has liked it...
