Why don't Mustangs wear a Blue Oval

Always puzzled me over the years why the Ford Mustang doesn't wear a Ford badge, but rather a Horse badge instead? Were they originally trying to imitate Ferrari or something? I remember a long time ago seeing an old-school car with just a Horse badge for the first time and wondering 'what car is that.. some old model Ferrari?'

There are plenty of other cars around that over the years have omitted the manufacturer's badge or included one of their own
Old Corollas used to have the crown of flowers
Toyota Soarers often come with Griffin badges
Early Statesmans didn't mention Holden at all

Mustang is a horse. Wild horse like our brumbie. That's why they wear the horse badge.

I'm pretty sure in the 80's they had the Ford badge at the front.

the north american p51d mustang great escort fighter of ww2. it wasent a jet tho prop,pistin whatever there called.

same thing with the hynadi tribion it has a T badge.

The North American P51D Mustang was a great escort fighter of WW2.

It wasn't a jet though, it was a piston prop (whatever they're called).

Same thing with the Hyundai Tiburon, it has a T badge.

(this is why their brains hurt, but being fair not everyone has strong english skills)

Well, I think all of you are right.

Both named after the WWII fighter, and secondly introduced by a manager at Ford being a breeder of quarterhorses.. the name "Mustang" was put forward to a focus group with others, including "Cougar", "T-Bird II" and "Torino" and others. Mustang came out on top.

I thought all muscle cars were called pony cars.

Ah jeez...I'm no expert but do FPV's have external ford badges or just an FPV badge? Maybe it's because mustang is fordUS have mustang ad their "premier performance" brand and thus consider it worthy of it's own personal badge.

a bit of trivia on the ltd name also

originally stood for LINCOLN TYPE DESIGN however by the end ford marketed it as LIMITED

i like to think its because ford marketing are rubbish and didnt realise thats what it actually stood for and just presumed like most ltd meant limited

That's right about the XC, the update 1978 was the first Falcon to have the oval badge, it was on the front grill.

Yeah totally agree with this coment, you will also notice some early Stangs have horses on the interior trim.

FPV's used to have Ford badges as well as FPV in BA/BF. The FG has only FPV badges on exterior. But the FPV badge is shaped in an oval with blue on it, so the connection to Ford is clear. Is the Bird's head on the FPV logo meant to be a Falcon's head (the actual bird species of Falcon)?

My 1983 Thunderbird has no Ford badging at all. The door sill plates have a Ford logo, thats it.....my 1970 Torino has no Ford badging except the GT badge on the front grille, does say Ford, but no Blue Oval.

I would assume so but it isn't a FORD logo on the badge, that's the point I was trying to make.
I've noticed some people get all uppity when you call their FPV a Ford. "nah mate it's an FPV not a Ford"....well...um...actually....the first word in your cars brand name is ford and ford certainly designed the whole body and ford performance vehicles is majority owned by ford, so, one would assume that an fpv is a ford no matter the badge? See where I'm going here people?

"Pony Car" is definately only for the 'stang.
