Default GPS with accurate ETA

Hi all, is there a GPS navigation unit or application that takes into account your actual current speed when predicting the ETA, rather than assuming the vehicle will be travelling at the speed limit? I found it amusing that in a plane, my phone GPS was still posting up the ETA as if I was in a car doing the speed limit, even though I was travelling at 700km/h.

My Gamin Nuvi updates the ETA all the time, as it is going off average speed or distance. I would only buy Garmin as it has the best interface and technology.

+1 .

A friend who already had a Tom Tom even bought a brand new Garmin after having seen it in use in my car. With my driving still!

Yep, I have a Garmin Nuvi too, great little thing and updates the ETA all the time.

Also still shows the speed when you have set a destination too. Which I have found a few of the others don't.

Yep +1

Garmin Nuvi updates all the time, has never been out/wrong yet, always arrive within the minute it says. I like it when I get a good run & pick up a minute or 2, problem is I then usually hit traffic & lose 3 or 4 minutes.

You guys realise that the GPS ETA will NEVER be wrong as it adjusts it self as you go along, its not magic, no GPS KNOWs what is up ahead, it just estimates a ETA if you get a good run or struck in traffic the time adjusts to the new ETA.

My 5 year old TomTom does it perfectly and has never been wrong, and I use it for work daily.

If you do long distance trips and take a few back roads at warp speeds you'll find it does update on practically all GPS's. Most do it at milestones, say when you reach Town A before schedule, the ETA will move back by the amount of time you've saved, but assuming you will be doing the speed limit from Town A to Town B and beyond.

So does the Garmin do this process 'live' taking into account your actual average speed, or does it do a similar thing?

My Navman MY65T updates as I go.

What XB GS 351 Coupe has posted is correct.

my old TomTom does it all the time as it goes along its a constant process, ie as soon as you get caught up in slow traffic it adjusts to new ETA, they all do it.

I think most people just do not understand how these things work.

A mate of mine recently came on a trip with me and he did not understand that it re calculates new routes if you go a different way to what the GPS has suggested and that it will keep telling you to turn around until it goes past the point of no return when it finally stops telling you to turn around an registers a new route.

He casually suggested in conversation whilst looking at my TomTom,"How smart is this it has worked out which way you want to go now, its amazing" I never laught so hard in my life, and even after explaining to him that now this is a shorter route than turning around he did not get it

I have a HTC Wildfire, which uses Google Navigate - epic..
It has 3 colours to indicate traffic, Orange (normal sydney traffic) green for good and red for heavy.
even pops into street view once you arrive so you know what to look at!
very accurate maps and ETA.

My old Garmin updated on the go, so does my uniden, they all do. As for using them in a plane, do you not think that 700 km/h might be a little out of their set parameters?

The funny thing is my uniden deals with emergency vehicle speeds better than the Garmin Nuvi we have in our work vehicles, the uniden seems to speed up the refresh rate on the emergency setting. I constantly see the Garmin have trouble keeping up on light/siren jobs.

My cheap navmans eta is accurate. I just wish the directions were. I recently drove from muswellbrook nsw to the gold coast and it tried taking me inland to some place i hadn't heard of in qld then across to Brisbane and then down to the gold coast. I started thinking that it was going stupid when i was going along dirt roads for 20 kilometres at a time through mountains. It ended up adding another 3 hours to the trip. And that was with up to date maps.
I should have just went the way i normally go.

Both my TomToms are quite good.

The Old one (Go 720) does a better job than the newer (ONEXL) device.

The ONEXL has a feature where the lady comes on and tells you the time, and then reminds you that you are still on the fastest route.

Ok Guys,

Can anyone tell me how my Garmin Nuvi knows exactly where I am in a tunnel when it has no satellite reception? I know it has no reception, because it comes up & says it has none & asks do I want it to keep searching for Satellites.

it will probably be a guestimate based on your speed entering the tunnel, probably would assume you wont stop etc.

I was watching mine earlier in the week through the Burnley Tunnel and was contemplating the same question. I was thinking "does the tunnel" have some sort of GPS antenna (as for radio stations in tunnel) - though I could not see how that would work.

Anyway, came out of tunnel and bingo, the location had a big reset. It is some sort of guesstimate, probably based on time and some average speed, not an accurate locator.

Both my Garmins have always been accurate ... my old Streetpilot was great ... and so is my current Nuvi ... and it can adjust with traffic as well ... giving alternate routes with adjusted ETA times if the detour is taken as well.

As for tunnels ... it's just an average taken from the last speed read prior to entering the tunnel ... you will see the speed on the GPS will not change once in the tunnel.

I've never had an issue with ETA
