Default Mobile Speed Camera With Camera In Rear Window

Happy New Year everyone.

Just a quick note, yesterday as I was driving past a mobile speed camera, I noticed for the first time that there was, what appeared to be a standard security camera, mounted in the rear window.

It might have only been the one I saw out yesterday, or it could be something they're rolling out with all mobile cameras.

Not sure what purpose it is meant to serve: could be used mainly for people trying to stir up the mobile camera and flashing other cars from behind the camera, or just generally trying to disturb the cameras in some way.

Be cautious!

It's nothing sinister.
The camera owners / operators are all little social butterflies.
The camera at the back will post a picture onto facebook, & make a polite 'tweet', proudly declaring that you have helped roads a safer place.

you really have to be on the ball to pick them now that they don't have all that gear on the roof. When they stop using Territorys it will be almost impossible!

Dark tint and no sign writing for me gives it away.

Not really that many current model vans that don't have some sort of business sign writing on them.

Plus the odd parking spots always helps as a giveaway.

its windows were that dark that on the way back from the shop we slowed down beside it and the misses yelled out something along the lines of 'nice illegal tint!'
havent seen that blue one again but they still sit there
same spot
every time
and if your in sa going up to the baroosa and head to williamstown from lyndoch
dont speed as you go into williamstown when it drops to 50
been told its one of the highest revenue rasing spots with camera in the state
they sit in the trees not far from the school

In NSW they must put out a speed camera sign up the road.
So you do get a warning that it is up ahead

Yes, but is the warning outside or within the range of the camera? I drove past a few from Syd to the Tweed but to be honest scanning the area 2 feet in and up from the footpath is not my priority when driving.

I know I didn't get done, I drove in an overly cautious manner. I wonder if the rules and regulations for fixed speed camera signage is the same as the mobile units?

200m and 100m behind the camera, not sure how far away the front one has to be though.

From the RMS (RTA) site

Improved mobile speed camera signage

A key initiative of the NSW Speed Camera Strategy is to enhance warning signage for mobile speed camera vehicles to ensure motorists see and recognise the enforcement activity.

Previously there was one warning sign 50 metres before a mobile speed camera vehicle. There will now be 2 warning sign on the approach to a mobile speed camera. The additional warning sign will be placed up to 250 metres before a mobile speed camera vehicle.

The warning signs will be raised higher off the ground to clear long grass and other obstacles and the writing on the signs will change from “Safety Camera Vehicle Ahead” to “Mobile Speed Camera Vehicle Ahead.”

The mobile speed camera vehicles will also have additional signage on them. This includes a picture of a camera and markings which say “Mobile Speed Camera” on the rear of the vehicle.

Here in Vic, pretty easy to spot, usually a Rav 4, Kluger or small SUV.

Also, not sure if it is the same in all states, but in Vic, the council controls the location of the cameras. The owner of the company must get a permit to park on the side of the road. The permit is for a certain spot's in the area. The camera cars are not allowed to just park anywhere here in Vic.

My mates mother, hands the permits out for our local council here. She approved the original spots for the camera cars and any new spots they want to use. So that is why you see the speed camera cars in the same spots in Vic.

As stated in the OP, it's a surveillance camera to record anyone approaching the vehicle from behind.

Another thing I look for apart from an SUV with dark tint is long non-factory aerials on the bonnet.

Without pics, there can only be guesses as to what the extra camera is for. If it's a manned unit, I don't know why they'd need surveillance cameras. Was it a van, or a 4x4?
Some states fit aftermarket reversing cameras to their speed camera vans, and other poor rear visibility vehicles, mounted with a bracket above the rear windscreen.

In the USA a few years ago, they had a mobile speed camera van on the side of the road where the operator was shot and killed.

Quote:
Speed Camera Operator Is Shot in Arizona
By JERRY GARRETT

Photo enforcement on Arizona roads has been a contentious issue ever since the state added at least 100 speed cameras this year. The debate reached fever pitch about two weeks ago when a camera operator was shot and killed while on duty.

Doug Georgianni, 51, an employee of Redflex Traffic Systems, was shot on April 19 as he operated a photo-enforcement van on a Phoenix highway. Last week, Thomas Patrick Destories, 68, was indicted on three felony charges, reported The Associated Press (via Leader-Telegram). The charges are first-degree murder, drive-by shooting and shooting a gun at a structure. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009...ot-in-arizona/

I'd hazard a guess that it is both a safety precaution as well as an insurance precaution too.

One of the private camera vans also had it's number plates detached as the driver was being distracted. Then said stolen number plates were used to speed past the camera numerous times.

Gee, if you get caught by a mobile speed camera in NSW you must be pretty thick...

have heard in VIC that there are also now camera cars that have rear facing detection systems that get you (photoed) as you approach the camera car, and not as you go past like they used to. no flash from the car either. usually parked on the side of a long flat stretch of road. true??
