Default Voice activated AU wagon!!!

I have an idea. I want to install voice activated devices in my car.I would like to be able to turn demister on ...radio on ...make phone calls.Control my power windows while I drive and lock/unlock my central door locking just by speaking to it.I am thinking of a stable operating system with voice recognition software.A computer which can handle car temperatures will be a necessity.

I would like to know if it is possible for a computer to drive relays? If so then I can make my project a reality.

I know it can be done. The siemens proffessional car kit has full voice/speech recognition. You say to the kit dial number and it talks to you and say number please. You tell it the number and it repeats it and you give it the ok and it rings. Why not with a car.??

Just for fun..

my guess it that you could probably get it to work for all the internal bits, due to the mic being inside, i know there are problems with other sounds and voice activation on my phone

Of course you can! You just need to learn how to interface the ports on a computer with a relay or control system. A computer is ultimately a device that deals with 'On' or 'Off' situations.

Hooking it up to different breeds of electronic devices might prove a problem. Most consumer equipment isn't designed to be adapted to computer control. It may be that Siemens has had all the units they were controlling designed for that purpose.

It'd be fun to see how far you could go, though!

To the central computer it is possible to record your drive time and have ready evidence in case of an accident.Of course you will need to mount a camera like this at the front

Gee it makes me think how dumb are car manufacturers???If little old me can think of these things why cant they?

As maddestman touched on, its all well and good until your car turns homicidal and you find yourself crawling around under the parcel shelf/dashboard pulling out circuit boards while your car sings 'daisy' to you. But apart from that risk, it sounds like an interesting idea

Hehehe, I don't think that you won't be able to do it, I just thought it was a suitable quote to corrupt, it was a choice of either using a reference to "2001: A Space Odyssey" or "Kit" from "Night Rider" - I thought the 2001 reference was classier, besides, it was easier to find a picture of HAL then KIT

Pretty sure jaycar sold a kit that interfaced a computer to a bunch of relays via serial or com ports.

get one of their printed catalogues - easier to navi than the online catledog.

Sounds interesting. make sure you get the nightrider style scaning LED's though.

In fact here you go:
PC LINK FOR AUTOMATIC CONTROL KIT
VELLEMAN USB Controlled Interface Kit
You'll also need THIS to have it all work smoothly

-Stu

EDIT: Whilst we're at it, i've always liked the idea of a computer in the car just for entertainment. If you mounted a trackball and a smallish screen in the dash it could be just as handy as a normal head unit (with some good software).
What i wonder is if the power supply (battery/alt.) is stable enough to run a regular computer, and how you'd have it know when to turn on/off, and if the screen (not some expensive designed-for-car unit) could work ok on DC voltage - or through an inverter without a true sinewave frequency.. (most are a bit square from what i understand).

All you need is a car PC. PCs aren't too bad at voice reginition, besides, you'd only need half a dozen phrases. You can interface to your PC with the parallel port. Yes, as mentioned there are kits (I built one with 2 anolog inputs and 8 digital outputs from memory). Then it would be a matter of programming it (not difficult at all). You'd have to integrate the voice recognition (something I don't know a whole lot about) with your programme, but I don't imagine this to be too big a deal - as there's more than one way to remotely interact with any applications you may develop.

If I've lost you somewhere there, then it's going to cost you a bit :P (i.e. pay someone else to do it).

All's good Stav. Just a light hearted comment by Jeremy came to mind with whatever was fitted in that Merc he test drove (very much doubt that was a Siemens though lol).

Anyway back on topic say if I said "Jim Mock" in your wagon would that result in the front wheels becoming airborne and the rear tyres struggling for traction?

Ahhh.. the K.I.T.T. returns! Can't wait to see it. Don't forget the red LED lights on the front, and that whoow-whoow ..... whoow-whoow ..... sound through the speakers.

I thought I heard Hollywood was thinking of making a Y2K version movie based on the Knight Rider series, but I didn't think it was based in Oz and on a AU wagon. I'm booking front row seats for this one!
