Heading off with a work colleague (also a good mate) to Jindabyne today. We're planning to ride our mtbs from Charlotte's pass to rawsons pass and then on foot to Kosciuszko, the highest point on mainland Australia, tomorrow. Then, on Sunday, we're planning to ride the thredbo valley trail, from thredbo through to Jindabyne, along the thredbo River, a distance of about 40km.

Been meaning to get up to koscie for a while, so really looking forward to this trip!

Make sure you have some warm clothing for up on top of Kosciusko, I got caught out once thinking it will be ok in the summer months.

Yep, taking a Kathmandu light puffer jacket in my backpack just in case. I'll also be wearing a long sleeve sports top for the ride, so should be OK. But you never know up there!

I remember getting my ears burned bleeding raw while hiking there in summer, because of the stiff breeze it wasn’t readily felt until too late. Hope you’re able to cover up against this.

I think the ride along the tvt should be OK as well be partly shaded by the tees alongside the path. The ride up to koscie will be the most likely spot due to no shade, but I have packed the sunscreen for just that case.

Taking way more crap than I'll probs need

It was the wind that got me blowing reasonably strong which gave a chill factor of around 1 or 2 degrees, I only lasted about 1 hour into a walk then happily retreated to the Eagle Nest restaurant for a warm meal.

From top of chairlift area you could ride back down to the village, that looked gutsy when I was watching a few bike riders doing it.

Not particularly today, but at Mum's there's a greengage plum tree that must be 60 years old, or very close to it. The trunk looks thoroughly dead: dried out and termite ridden but somehow it has one good, young, small branch that still bears a small number of the most delicious plums. (Three or so years ago that branch was so loaded with plums that I made a support for it.)

There are a few other greengage trees that have sprung up near the old one, but I am not yet convinced that their plums are as good as the old tree's plums.

Made it to the top of the world. OK, not quite, but at least it's the top of mainland Australia. Time for some sustenance.

I was having a pretty average day for no particular reason. Popped spotify on and selected "Best of Rock: 1997" . My mood has lifted insurmountably. I have been whisked back to a much simpler time and I can calm the fridge down a bit. 😂

Cheers, Tony

I’m now dad to a 6 week old kitten my daughter hand fed from 4 weeks old, it was abandoned in a plastic shopping bag with 3 of its litter mates. What a hilarious little ball of fluff, but a little scary at the same time, I’m not used to claws and teeth.

This is a very much a what in the weird one.
So my mate who rents my granny flat was aimlessly swinging around a broom. So i got my fancy torch and got the spider.
Then he proceedes to tell me about the possum that runs about on his roof at night and points. So 2500 lumens and yeah, a possum on the fence. I did something dumb, the thing should have run off being spotted. I walked up to it on the fence atleast expecting to be scratched or bitten.
My mate then asks in sort of shock 'did you just pat that thing?'. Its fur was surprisingly soft. I thought it would be wirey.

Had a Possum walk down a tree branch to meet me at eye level, gave it a little scratch under its chin and quietly turned around and disappeared back into the tree. I suspect neighbours giving fruit snacks as it was rather portly.

Don't get too friendly with the possums, they won't hurt you, but they have a bad habit of p****** & s****** all over the place.
They are worse than a feral cat.

Spent the last 4 days working in lovely sunny Newcastle.

Humid as, but at least it was a shady site with a sea breeze.

Hard to say isn’t it? He never talks about females, but says a bit at times about male mates etc,so we can presume it was probably a male harrasser

It was 2 ladies in their mid 40s on a girls night out looking for fresh meat i guess. Not a deal i was willing to go with. For some reason when a bird who has 5 kids to 5 different blokes starts to tell you why each of her kids dads is a ******** really doesnt do it for me.

I felt good reading DFB’s “Green Thumb” thread update. It’s the quiet persistence with added knowledge which makes it a go-to.

And it reminded me about my neighbour’s ancient rose bush I pruned heavily way out of season (mid December). It’s now got massive sprays of light pastel flowers with that traditional, slightly soapy, old-school rose scent.

You are very kind, much appreciated.

Roses are pretty resilient, the only thing that will knock them around is even the slightest hint of glyphosate.

I think a few people would have really appreciated my grandparents house before they got to the age of needing to move into assisted living. Lawns were couch and my grandpa attended to them meticulously, they were not far short off a putting green. White picket fence out the front with the rose garden. Dunno how ethical it is these days, but sandstone reatainers for the garden beds. Out back, same deal, couch lawn. Green house for the orchids. The house itself was built late 40s (not by my grandpa, he bought it late 50s but had some tasteful modifications done) but had sandstone facade in places. Oh, and there was an epic fish pond out the back.
So the place sold in 2010 and my grandpa was devistated when he found out it was getting bulldozed for duplexes.
