My mate dropped in to see me earlier this arvo driving his beaten up 2000 Ford Festiva.
I heard him coming a mile away!,what was once a nice little runabout is now rack n ruin!,he is proud of the fact that the only time it has EVER been serviced was when Ford did the original first free service for him after he brought the car brand new from the Ford place in Oakleigh in 2000.
Now I do my own servicing on the AU (thanks to this great site!!) oil and filter every 5 thou without a second though about it,plugs at 10 thou etc, It just makes me sick how some people treat cars and keep em going, and then we have my sister with her VX crummydore, she got the 100 thou service done at 110,000 (only cause the light came on the dash) and it will probably not see another mechanic until the service light comes back on in 10-15 thou, and then she will probably let it go another few thou on top of that,inbetween radiator top ups from the hose,hasn't heard of coolant.
And I bet the bloke who did the service for her used savings brand mineral crap too as I couldn't see them using anything decent like a semi synth half decent oil, so if my mathematics are up to scratch then the formula goes: mineral oil+10-15 thou kms=one caked up/********D up engine to me,do you guys know anyone like this?

Surpisingly, I know of too many people who are similar to this. Perhaps not as bad but not far off. Their opinion is 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' and that includes servicing. They dont bother to service it till either the service light comes on, it starts clunking or it seizes up because there is no oil left what so ever. they beleive that a car should never need maintenance because it costs money. Just get in and drive. Stupid really.

I pity those who have to fix it or buy their car second hand after them.

My mum is like that with her RAV4 she has a toyota dealership across the road from her work and it took her over 50,000 kms to get the thing serviced after the first free service my dad had to literally steal the rav to get new tyres put on it because they were so bald it would be like driving in the wet even when it was dry.

people like this don't see the value of looking after something and just run it to the ground and in some cases its death lol (know a few mates that do the same)

i will pin point it to laziness and lack of money to actually do something about it.

I can understand from a financial viewpoint why people would hold off on doing a service, but I know of some who would deliberately not bother spending the cash and then flog the car off to some unsuspecting sap just after he has done 1 service he's done in the lifespan of the car. And using cheap oil and plugs at that. Scum I tell ya.

But for those who genuinely are hard up for cash and just cant afford it, I have even offered to pay for the service myself to help them out and then state that they need to save $5 a week for the next 3-6 months to get the next service done. It does promote better life & economy for their vehicle I say to them.

These story's are nothing compared to one of my old mans brain dead mate. One day he decided that he would do the points in his old suzuki seiara. Anyway the moron sets the gap the about .75mm wide, twists the dizzy to full advance and drives it over to our place, (40 minute drive) steam ****ing out the bonnet since about 1/2 way, didnt bother stopping or taking any notice that it was pinging its nut off.

Of course by the time he got over our place it had boiled dry and blown the head gasket. Anyway, to cut the story short i agree to do the head for costs plus 50 bux for my trouble. Cost about 200 all with machining, gaskets, plugs, coolant, oil ect.

This was three months ago and so far ive seen $100 from the snake, From now on its money up front, even for "mates".

my car only gets oil changes and what not at services. i try and look after it as much as possible, but with at least 6 days per week dedicated to uni/work, i dont get much free time to do anything.

Funny this should come up, my mum has had her ED for about 18 months and never had it serviced. Tonight my brother (commodore fan) calls up and says "You know Falcon engines, right? Mum's oil light came on today and when we checked there wasn't any oil in it. Can you give it a service for her on the weekend?"

Rofl that is nuts.

Yeah, I work with someone who has never washed her car. When it gets totally putrid she takes it back to the dealership for a free clean(Mercedes). She has sh1tty nappies, rotten fruit, and god knows what else in there. Its just plain feral, I refuse to go near her car.

I very rarely clean the outside of my car (once in 10 months.)

But the inside is spotless, and the oil's changed every 5,000 km's.

nothing too unusual we see come through our shop ...

we get customers drop in a lot of cash to install new gimmicks like ig stereo, flash lights, tachos, gauges and gawd knows what else, but the car hasnt seen a service in at least 25thou km, no coolcan addatives, thermo fan not working, oil that can be used as fuel, etc etc

it took me half an hour of convincing of doing a service before spending money on more useless stuff. besides the fact that the pistin rings are stuffed in this engine ...

People please please pleasedo servicing, it will save u in the long run ... !

my sisters like that her kids can trash a good car in a week. and nothing gets serviced or repaired until it breaks down. my xr had its free 3000k service on time it had an oil change at about 8000 and its just had the 15000 service at 14200. and it gets washed twice a week, mainly because of seagulls at work.

i have a VC Commodore. Its perfect cream paint and it gets dirty if i go for a drive after ive washed it there is dust on it and it stands out more than white.

People like that give you HOPE! I mean, it shows you how tough these cars really are. Take my mates VN for example, the thing's never seen an oil change or a quiet drive in its life, thrashed mercilessly from day 1, still going strong. Same his brother, he's got an EB V8 'lane, it gets HAMMERED.. it hardly ever breaks down.

mate if that car came to me with used nappies in it i would ring said cow and tell her to pick up her car and never bring it back here plus give her a mouthfull. i hope you call her the names she deserves, fancy having her children live in that sort of filth.

A mate of mine is terrible with cars. He had an HT holden, very very nice looking car. had a fairly strong 308 with a 4 speed behind it. bought it for a song, and never looked after it. never washed it properly, never maintained the engine. driving into the city one friday night and i noticed a suspicious knock. he wasnt overly concerned an we continued on our merry way. 30 seconds later the engine completely stopped, so we coasted to a stop. checked the oil, and the bloody thing was bone dry. spider webs and dust fell off the dipstick. couldve slapped him. so we filled it up with oil, but the damage was already done. he tried to drive it onto the trailer, but that was the final straw and it stuck a leg out of bed.
he now drives an old corolla, and still neglects it. he's also building up an HK prem at the moment. think im going to do his servicing for him. stupid twit
Just dont understand how people can pay good money for a decent car, then run it into the ground. they are also the same people who whinge about their cars breaking down all the time

When my folks separated mum kept the EF wagon we had, and in two years since she's had it, its had one service. And that was because i actually ended up buying all the stuff for it! Its been about a year since then and the front bumper is mangled, LH blinker lens is superglued on, hasnt had a service, has been on at least four lengthy trips, and she canes it everwhere. She wonders why it is starting to use more fuel. Whew and thats only the tip of the iceberg. That wagon is one of the best cars I've ever come across. Despite her negligence for the car, it has never let anyone down and still goes as hard as it always has. It's one great car which is why i wish she'd take care of it.

I’d show her the company’s Occupational Health And Safety policy and make her read out the section on exposing workers to unacceptable hygiene and bio hazards. Then in the politest possible way, ask her to leave, take her disgusting vehicle and never return.

That's gross. The worst I've had is a rotting orange. Only because it rolled out of my basket and under the seat where i didn't know it was hiding.

I find it hard to keep my car clean because I live on the Cumberland Hwy and so get a lot of dust from the road. I would have to wash it every day!!!!!!!

Hey and my baby is getting her service today. Am just waiting for the call from PW at Smithfield. God those guys are nice.

My mum and dad bought an AUIII SR Wagon which from Day one was never cleaned inside or out. I've done it a few times, but they say they are too busy to worry about it. Seats are all stained,carpets have build up of gunk. Bought Brand New.

Same as their focus. Bought brand new, they never keep the cars clean. The focus is a red colour, and I keep telling the old man that it will fade very fast if he doesn't wash it and polish it. He said it will never fade because he got paint protection and believes that protects the car for ever. I said maybe, but if you abuse the paint like you do, it doesn't protect anything.

Both cars were in the garage and they put the cats metal bowl on the bonnet or the roof. So the cat pushes the bowl around when its eating. Scratches.

It's funny that when growing up after I got my licence and my first car, dad gave me an ear full about not keeping the car clean. Now i watch his cars rot away. I keep telling them to maintain the cars, but they are after the cheapest in everything. Servicing affected too.

He used to have a Telstar that was never serviced. Checked the oil and the stick was dry.

Tell them that if they ever want to get good money for the car at upgrade time, they should keep the car in good condition. They don't do many kays each year and would be lucky to hit 10,000 a year. They don't care, just drive it in to the ground.

I always make a point of having a clean ute.
Its a stereotype that utes must be dirty... Buggered if I know why...
I have been to a few ute shows, and it always makes me laugh. There are always two or three there, who went out the night before and got their utes as dirty as humanly possible. The judges mostly mark them down for it anyway!
I always present my ute in the cleanest possible way.

I cop a lot of crap from one of my mates, because i keep my car very clean (yes i am a clean freak), and that i fix something straight away once it appears.

Then you look at his holden apollo. That car has been sent to hell and back. I seriously don't know how it survives. He is currently driving without 2nd gear. He drove it from melbourne to mallacoota last summer. Don't ask me how it made it.
