I'm not gonna pretend I know what is going in here but I took these photos is a very remote part of WA (Edjudina/Porphyry).
If this is a genuine attempt to replace the head with a block of wood, Im very impressed. Feel free to offer your take!

To add to that id say in that block of wood there is most likely some very crude check valves maybe reed type valves made out of strips of thin tin probably a tin can or possibly marbles or steel balls.

Meh - Russians been using wood in engines and as replacement car parts since Noah played halfback for the Bunnies.
