Need a new Clutch

I was driving home 1 night and my clutch just went firm , and couldnt even put it into Gear -toed it back to my house- so im guessing I need a new Clutch, And rang a local mechanic and they quoted me $1000 bucks for a new one (not including labour) So was just wondering is that a normal price to be paying for a new clutch?

Id be looking around mate. I got quoted around the $800 mark for clutch and install in my BF xr6.
I would take it to a clutch and transmission place, it may just be somehow jammed. When a clutch goes, they generally just go slowly. As in, you will notice it takes a little longer to get the power down.

Sounds like something has seized, may be the throw out bearing, the clutch should be fine pedals don't go hard when the clutch goes, quite the opposite actually.

Prices will depend on brands, there's lot of cheap stuff out there, but normally cheap for a reason.

Awesome, thanks guys I thought that 1G was a was a bit rich imo. 800 bucks for it all sounds about right.

I paid 1k complete seems a fair price ,my nephew has the same but the turbo version and was charged 1.4K seems reasonable

First, Two snapped clutch cables where the pedal just hangs in the breeze.

Next, cable pulled out of clutch plate.

All required me driving without the clutch to the repairer, thankfully Darwin traffic not heavy.

Recently clutch went very heavy - was told would need a new clutch soon.

Clutch $385, four hours labour, new spigot bearing and machined flywheel was a total cost of less than $900

Impossible to price not knowing what exactly the problem is, could be a minor issue or major rebuild who knows, but when the clutch goes it usually starts slipping and then gets worse and slips more, or it blows up and disintegrates, may be in a race situation or harsh usage.

In neither case does the pedal go hard.

Well I've taken this car to the Drags a few times, And harsh usage, the only way to drive an XR6
What do you mean by slipping? and I cant even put in into gear, and tried yesterday to start the car in 1st gear , turned the key and it just clunked out.

Slipping is as it sounds, sort of like driving with your foot on the clutch

I assume these are a cable operated clutch? I would be looking at that first, or perhaps somthing preventing you from being able to depress the peddle

It could be a problem resulting in the box coming out and depending on the km on the car it might be beneficial to replace the cluch while the box is out but a frozen clutch peddle don't sound like the clutch plate or pressure plate to me

you have said you give the clutch a hard time, you need to fit a clutch that will suit your power and driving habits, otherwise you could be changing it again as little as a few weeks, most the cheapy clutches are only good for stock power and gentle driving

ok so you got any suggestions on which clutch I should look to buy or ones that are money well spent on?

At a guess I'd say your pressure plate has gone. The diaphram fingers should be all even, but when they pack up the diaphram fingers all bend out of place making the pedal have equal firm pressure all the way to the floor instead of getting lighter as you push it further down. If thats the problem replace the whole lot and get flywheel machined. As suggested if you beat up on it get a higher performance one. But be prepared to pay.

Exactly what was happening to mine and exactly what I did.

talk to Aitkenvale Dyno they should be able to recommend a clutch for you, I would recommend a Mal Wood Clutch, but would be dearer than you have been quoted, but does come with a new flywheel and alloy csc, which most will not

As good as a 1k fitted clutch sounds I spent nearly double that on a mal wood/ace clutch. It gets a little bit of punishment but I know it will never let me down and will easily outlast a cheaper one by a mile. At the end of the day you do get what you pay for
