Pointless. China would have multiple suppliers, they would have large stakes in coal producers worldwide and have probably bribed their way into influencing politicians worldwide.

We were told earlier today that our company is standing us down at the end of next week. They claim it will be for two weeks. I suspect it will be for much longer.

What I'm observing is how staunch free market, small government advocates become socialist all of a sudden.
While I accept these are extraordinary circumstances and we can argue about the how and where the spending should be, I agree it is necessary. But it is still funny how it works when the chips are down, everyone wants a handout |

Multiply their figures by 5 and you will probably be still short of the real tally.

This thread will probably be an interesting read to look back on in 10 to 20 years or so...how our predictions and the projections and the restrictions and our opinions/attitudes changed over the weeks and months.
I've been working from home for several weeks now - I can see in 20 years the kids of today will be reminiscing "Remember that Covid thing, and we all did a term (or two) of school at home, and our parents had us keep move the mouse every now and then to keep their Skype green" |

I try to buy both Aus made and owned as a priority. Also FYI, LION owns the controlling stake in Canberra Milk. LION is owned by the Japanese. Bega does own a 25% share, so it is a little bit Australian. Riverina Fresh and Norco are both Australian.

Geeze, those Canberra milk TV adds were the pits, even worse than Kiewa Milk.

It's going to be a long road back for Australia if we wanted Australian manufacturing. It's been disappearing from 1980 - it took 40 years to go so it's not coming back quickly.
Business owners, government and the people have been OK with it going with the general belief that manufacturing doesn't suit our size, resources and other abilities. Everyone's been told to get a job in mining, trades, hospitality, tourism, retail, admin, clerical,it, business etc and leave the manufacturing to 3rd world companies for decades. I'm surprised that the gov is throwing so much money out for welfare right now but they've never wanted to spend money on the australian secondary industry. If you want to buy Australian your only guarantee is with primary produce (meat and veg). So much packaged good has moved to NZ! or even Europe rather than make jobs here. Since when did they have a higher ability than here? If there's going to be a long recession with millions of unemployed then a think about secondary manufacturing by the gov needs to done. Do something about it for a change. Make more steel here and other end products rather than just export ore. Maybe do something about our water supplies. Hell annex the holden and ford factories and make some electric utes |

At least if you were going to kick off manufacturing again it can be started in a much more efficient setup rather than old factories and methodology.

It's owned by a British company. That company was acquired by the Chinese a few years ago though.
You just can't escape the Chinese, unfortunately.

That is the marker. We are roughly at 18% of GDP in bailouts at the moment.
They doubled the dole where as before the debate was about about $50 or so bucks which to be fair would be structural budget issue where these measures have sunset clauses. That's how you know **** is ****ed up when a conservative government is spending this much. A small budget surplus evaporated into a massive deficit. As far as I'm concerned as long as we can keep the unemployment rate under the rate of spending, that will be a win. Last edited by MITCHAY; 04-04-2020 at 01:19 AM. |
