Hey guys,
I'm sorry to be starting another post regarding bad starting, but I've just spent $500 on diagnostics with no fix. I'm hoping someone may have had a similar problem in the past. My XR6 VCT Ute (series 2) takes about 3 goes to start when cold. It starts fine, runs for about a second, and dies, about three times. On the third or fourth time it sustains, but struggles and idles badly for a few seconds. It starts first go when warm, but still a little rough. The following items have been checked: Ignition leads (replaced) spark plugs (replaced) crank angle sensor & cam angle sensor injectors (serviced) fuel rail and pressure fuel filter (replaced) IAC valve (cleaned) battery throttle body coil packs VCT system (as it has a vacuum connection to something) The only other thing I can think of is the engine computer. Which means my next move will be to have it removed and tested by Ford, an expensive exercise I'll bet. If anyone has any experience with bad starting that was not due to the above components, please let me know. |

Have a go at resetting the computer first before you have it pulled out. There are a few discussions on here on how to do it.

You may need to replace the IAC valve - cleaning it doesn't always work.
Could also be leak in inlet manifold gasket (common issue) - try tightening the bolts up first, and see how that goes, but then I'd be looking for other vacuum hoses that have come off, and finally I'd change the IAC (borrow a known good one from a mate if you can, just to test that it is the problem - a new one is around $180 odd!).

You can spray deodorant along the inlet manifold gasket and see if it helps it run better. Smells better than aerostart or carby cleaner.

Thanks guys, I took the car to Ford yesterday in Brisbane, they've apparently found an open circuit in the PCM causing no signal from the VCT unit. They've quoted $400 to repair (what is likely a five minute solder job) or $960 for a new computer. I wish I had my own tools and workspace- I'd fix it myself.
Thought I'd let everyone know about this as there are a number of 'bad starting' threads around. Of course- this may not really be the problem... |
