info and advice on xb gt please.

I have put a holding deposit on a big port 4 speed XB GT sedan and am flying up mid next week to inspect (and hopefully purchase it)
I decided on this one due to it being a big port 4 speed car. I have a good friend that is a top beater / painter that will repaint the car for me.

I am just looking for info on XB GT's with the big port motor as i am getting conflicting stories on how many were built
also what to look for when inspecting the car to ensure its a genuine car and to ensure it is a genuine big port car.
any other creative advice or criticism would be great also

get the VIN no,
call up FORD
give them the details
and they will give you a vehicle report.
jeez mate there was an XA GT 351 4spd for sale last year that was 20K in about the same condition. matching no's too.

Ford will tell you nothing so that's a waste of time! If it is a factory manual 11/73 XB GT it is a big port car no problem there.

If you don't know how to pick a genuine GT get the car inspected by someone that can. It is just too risky unless you really know what you are looking at. There have been a heap of rebodied XB GTs on the market lately and stacks of Compliance Plates on Ebay.

Present owner, Ian Smith, from NSW, Australia purchased his 4 speed XB GT Sedan in 1990 as a used vehicle. The car has all matching numbers and the original factory Yellow Blaze colour. Trim is black with cloth inserts. No images are available at this time.

i have a fairly good knowledge of the x series and think i could pick a major repaired or bogged up car. i will also take some time to check vin number ect.

I would maybe take someone from a Gt club thats very clued up on what to look for but make sure its a broke person .

Would be worth getting in contact with one of the local GT Clubs and even the GT Historian if you have all the numbers for it.

Correct: 211 total, 72 coupes, 139 sedans.
The imported Bigport 4V Motor was fitted to all manual (toploader) XBGT's till 12/73 (all auto XBGT's had the aussie small port motor). from 1/74 they all had the aussie motor.
Ive done allot of research on this particular "special". I owned and restored one too.

If you know how to identify a 54H shell that's the main part, its too difficult to explain the intricate bits and pieces, PM me if you want and i can help more, the best option obviously is have someone with you who knows what to look for.
Just looking at the pics though the car looks original and genuine, apart from the enginbay mods.

In a nutshell, if the car has the original engine block, you have a big port motor - this pic is the key:



That '4' in the corner is what you need to see.

The car looks a lot like ours did before we started (after it had sat for 18 years); I'm sure you're aware that you're in for a big job. Keep in mind that we spent $30k+ and it sold for $35k... but if you enjoy the restoration and plan to keep it for a while then it's all worth it.
