Go and buy your own Castrol Edge 5-30w from Supercheap & tell them to use it for the service. Much cheaper that way.

I experienced a noticeable improvement when I put Castrol Edge 5W-30 into my manual Zetec. I only found out about synthetic oils through these forums.

BTW, Big Damo, have you changed the transmission oil yet? Just wondering if you did and whether it helped with the character-building reverse gear?

Haven't done it yet as I work elsewhere now so I no longer get cheap servicing, what I'm going to do is do it next service and do everything at once rather than bringing it for a once off thing.

Sup T. I got a few bottles of Castrol Edge 5W30 when it was on sale for like $32.00 from Super Cheap, have a look around though as it seems to be on sale a fair bit (retails for $50 IIRC). Used it in my WP, and in my WS. Good stuff!

Also, sorry but while we're on the topic of oil, does anyone know where the drain and filler plugs are on the 5sp manual?

I just bought so penrite sin gear oil, for the 5 speed. Just trying to find a mechanic who will do a service for some reasonable money rather than both my young testicles and my bum's virginity.

Id do it myself but I cant stamp the log book. Boo.

hey man the filler plug is where the gear selectors are on the gearbox behind the black plastic cover that hides the selectors, its a 8mm allen key, drain plug should be at the bottom of the gearbox, i didnt really have a look coz my oil drained out completly when i was changing cv joints and gearbox :P.

Does the WS use the same IB5 gearbox as the WQ?

Reason I ask is that I don't think the IB5 has a drain hole - but I'm hoping I'm wrong!

How the hell are you supposed to drain the oil? Take out the driveshafts?

LOL when I picked up the fez the mechanic said "it took a little longer because the G/box has no drain hole! I had to use suction."

So far it has seemed to make the box a little more refined, don't get me wrong it's still rough as guts but goes into gears better. As for the reverse crunch, I haven't experienced since but its only early days.

Oh my that Castrol oil is gold. Quieten down the engine nicely.

When I complained to the dealer about the crunching they said to slot it into 4th and then select reverse. I wasn't impressed seeing as its 2010 not 1963.

Wife has told me reverse played up yesterday.

I always learned pushing the clutch in for at least 4 seconds before selecting reverse and it will not make a noise. although lately i have to put let the clutch out a little bit and select reverse at the same time otherwise it is a pig to get into reverse.

I am almost low on engine oil (enough to last next week) - would it be OK for me to top up the engine oil with this so called Castrol Edge oil (5w-30)?

From Castrol's website:

"May be topped up or mixed with normal mineral oils. Note: Use of conventional oils for top up will reduce the performance of Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30."

Just further on the oils, I used the Fuchs 5W-30 fully synthetic a couple of times and really enjoyed the results. The engine was smoother and quieter than using the Castrol, and it revved quite freely.

It's a fully synthetic oil and is reasonably priced.

I topped my engine oil with Castrol Edge Sports 5W-30, I put in around 500ml as an precaution - the car went quiet and ran smoothly, works really well.
