Early territory’s disappearing?

I’ve been on a quiet hunt for an early Terri for a few weeks now.... plenty of haggard ones around, not many clean ones.

Went and looked at one at a wholesaler the other day, they want 5k for it, but as is where is. No reg or rwc.
And that seems to be common for dealers around here.

When I asked him why it wasn’t being sold ‘drive away’ ready he said the changes to the stat warranty laws last year made them unviable to sell below 7-8k unless they know for certain all the bushes etc have been done.
Unless it’s mint they send them straight to the wrecker, or a second tier wholesaler.
Look on market place and it seems for every one Terri for sale there five being wrecked.

But let's face facts, that is what happens to 15+ year old cars. Many don't even last that long.

Still the best car I ever owned and so proud that it was conceived, developed and manufactured here in Australia, based on Falcon basics. Could it have been better, sure. I imagine a 2nd generation would have been fantastic, but that never happened.

The deterioration of interior trim and low standard spec of the ICC are two big factors. Also base/clear doesn’t seem to be ageing well.

Unless you’re a keen DIY’er, this - along with centre bearings and diff bushes - cumulatively knocks them on the head.

You met a 2nd-hand car dealer who was only interested in making easy-money from overpriced cars, and hates honouring his statutory obligations???

They're old and most were used and abused as family hacks. They're complex enough vehicles that even moderate repair jobs can be fairly costly. Doesn't take a lot of send one to the scrapyard unfortunately.

Rust, crappy paint etc etc haha the list goes on.

The one here has negligible rust. I think most was due to the door seals and made worse by poor panel prefinishing. You won’t find that much rust on an equivalent year Euro in the same environment.

After 13yrs though I was tired of maintaining this beauty, someone got a good one cheap. I hope it's still out there.

There wasn't that much on my decade earlier ED Falcon either, it was much better finished/sealed. Ford Aus dropped the ball there, or sacrificed that to spend the money elsewhere, or to simply survive a bit longer

My 09 SY2's interior is literally falling apart. Hand brake handle, hood lining, window switches, compartment clips & the CD player doesn't work.

On the plus side all the diff bushes & ball joints were done last Christmas, so its got that going for it.

Why are the early ones disappearing? well my 2015 titanium diesel is worth $10K as a trade in apparently. I have no doubt id get more as a private sale but their values don't hold.
Id say 5K for an early one with no reg at a wholesaler is too much.

I sold traded my first one for $3K at 246,000kms it served me well but I wouldn't sell it to anybody I knew.

they made improvements over the 11 years but the early ones today - walk away

I sold mine last month for $3k, 2007 SR with 7 seats, one owner, 170,000km.

I had spent best part of $2k on repairs in the last year.

i just put a deposit an '08 AWD Ghia for cheap, its uneconomical to repair for a regular private person but for me i can do it all myself for the cost of parts

it needs:
steering wheel ($350)
door trim ($100+) if i can find one
inner door handle ($25)
roof lining ($300)
brakes x4 ($600)
all diff bushes and suspension ($3500)
rust repairs ($1500)
missing plastic panels ($200 + paint)

so if it was in good condition it would be worth $6-8K

so whats it really worth?? nothing really

And there’s a boatload of them on the market in that sort of condition.
I can do most of the work except the bushes, but I don’t really want to.
So if I can find an early one, even a povo pack, that’s had most of it done I’d be happy.
I’m also happy to have the btr over the zf for future repair/servicing peace of mind. The extra fuel usage doesn’t bother me.

FYI, I just queried trade-in price on our 2006 Territory (for a 2017 Mustang).

With suspension work recently done (doesnt matter)

Curious how much you listed it for...advertised for $10k and you came down $7k from there? Sorry, that is a bit silly - buyer should only expect $7k off if it were advertised for $30k or more.

I knew the trade in value was at best $2k, similar ones were advertised everywhere for $6-7k by dreamers. I sold mine to a mate who wanted it to tow his boat. With no negotiations needed.

I think the Territory is in that phase of life where most people shrug and send it off to the knackers. Only a few Territory's will somehow survive this phase, and become beloved antique/classic/historical/collectable cars. For example, SYII Turbos would be as rare as hen's teeth by now.

I really miss the SY AWD petrol Territory. Such a pleasure to drive.

Yep you guys have the goods on them, it's the cost of repairs vs the value of the car, most will get scrapped.

Our 2007 SY has the roof lining falling in, the orange foam deterioration behind this that Citroenbender mentions. Rear door rubbers have shrunk I've just discovered. (2 x $130 on fleabay) Other than a bit of the leather scuffing the interior is OK. Coastal car is rusty. We did the bushes with Nolathane which gave it a bit of a harder ride, if the kids marry into a family that owns a suspension business, I will have them done back to rubber as the ride/handling was amazing with that. ZF has had fluid changed 2 times iirc, still goes. It's not worth much at all, but it's been a brilliant car. It's greatest moment was up at Hotham in 2018 when temps fell below -10 (to a record - someone got busted adjusting a NSW station from -12 or so back up to -10 in that event!) and the new Euro diesels had the fuel freeze in their lines. The good 'ol (still unopened) 11 year old petrol I6 AWD fired up into life first go, and full time AWD didn't need chains that day, so it was a very easy, pleasant trip up from Dinner Plain to the slopes for some amazing unmarked powder on the first run of the day. When the Terry took us home after some food and drinks at the end of the day, the poor mechanics were still blowing out frozen diesel lines with these gas cannister looking things...

At $1500 value on a good day, I'm tempted to keep the old girl and begin fixing her up, so that she may shine again, vintage, in the snow one day.

Such a shame the petrol I6 AWD wasn't continued up until 2016

Or to put it another way, I sold the car for what's it was worth. Same way I want to buy a car for what it's worth not what some wood duck advertises it for. Not sure why you and your mates struggle with what most people would see as a sensible way to transact.
