Default 23 quake hits geelong reagion

morning all

at approx 0330 this morn the geelong reagion was hit with a 2.3 quake
info can be found here

as far as i know there was no damage from it but man it made a ripper of a ride in the area of corio I am in

there was a massive bang then the house shook for approx 30 seconds and it was big enough to wake the whole family

poor little Chloe was scared big time it woke her up and didnt go back to sleep till around 0700

all the dogs in our area went mental for about an hour or so

didnt know what the hell it was at first thought there was another house explosion in the area again

I did hear a bang at around that time but I doubt it was an earthquake. Didn't feel anything out here in Grovie.

taken from bay fm
here is the artical

It struck just after 3.30 and was centred to the city’s north-west, measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale.

But while it may have been a relatively minor tremor it was certainly noticed by residents.

Several people said they thought their nightmare of an explosion at Corio’s Shell refinery had finally come true.

“ My dogs were going berserk barking and … there was a huge bang, a couple more barks, then silence – I thought Shell or the LPG site had gone up,” said Annette Butcher of Corio.

Many people took to Facebook to say they were woken by the quake.

One said, “My whole unit shook all the windows were shaking like mad I thought they were gonna smash.”

Another person reported, “Rumbled (sic) noise, dog going berserk, woke me up, bedside lamps shook and windows, live near power plant. Damn scary. Then complete silence.”

Geelong has never been hit by a major earthquake but smaller tremors are not uncommon.

The most recent quake measuring over five on the Richter scale was in 1965 but more than one hundred smaller incidents have been recorded over the last 170 years.

There are numerous fault lines near Geelong with the biggest located to the city’s north, known as the Lovely Banks Fault.

Experts say it has a “scarp” (surface displacement) of over 100 metres, the second largest in Australia.

The Rowsley Fault starts about 16km west of Geelong and was the cause of a 4.7 magnitude quake that shook Balliang in 1977.

Picture: Despite the perception that Australia is relatively earthquake-free, this earthquake map from the University of Western Australia shows just how common they really are.
and they are not uncommon either

I'd say you probably would have had to have been right over the top of it to feel it. Definately nothing felt out here in Grovedale.

Its weird. When I was truck driving I would spend 2 to 3 nights in Christchurch each week and felt several aftershocks. A few of them was when I was sleeping and each time woke up about 10 seconds before I felt it. I wasn't the only one this happened to at the depot.

A 2.3 are you for real, sure it wasn't a bee farting ?

I'm sorry I shouldn't mock but a 2.3 is very small, in fact I don't think I've ever felt one less than 3.5, and in the last 2 years I half probably felt well over 100 quakes and not all from Canterbury either.

One thing I do know is I will never forget Sept 4th 2010 and the 20 odd aftershocks over 5.0 that followed the original 7.1 quake.

just a few minutes ago Melbourne north had quake (about 8.57 pm approximately), it was minor, just enough to make the house shake and make me run out the front to see if a truck rolled over in the front yard, probably went for about 15 / 20 seconds, with the quake in geelong the other day it makes me wonder if something bigger is brewing?
