Default Outage this afternoon

Good evening

Some of you will be aware that we had an extended outage this afternoon between 1.25 and 6.50 p.m.

The cause of this was a rogue apache process that could not be stopped which we discovered when trying to restart the service after a minor configuration change. Unfortunately the symptroms looked like something else and some of the things we thought were happening actually weren't (like our attempts to reboot the server for example).

The end result was that once we actually did get it rebooted it is up fine. Another lesson in the vagaries of Linux.

Our apologies for the down time but we'll know more next time.

Cheers
Russ

There have been a few outages of late (not a criticism, merely an observation).
Damn those "Rogue Apaches" , had we have known earlier, "Chief" I could have "circled the wagons" & held them off.......

Have more outages been happening? Last night at 10.45pm I was "kicked" off the page I was viewing and then couldn't log back in. This is happening to a few people I have been talking too.

Can't be something to do with IE because last night I tried logging in via Firefox when I got booted out and nope...still couldn't log on for about 15mins.

Beats me but it has happened to me before but only in the past month.

It just came back now after an hour or so off the air. There have been many outages of late. Some last minutes, others hours. My observations at least.

There have indeed been several in the last 3 weeks after a long period of stability.

As far as we can establish at present about half of them have been widespread network issues for the ISP that have impacted them globally while the rest have been our server only (including these last two).

The error logs have not really indicated a root cause and we have escalated this current one for further review of the server which is now almost 2 years old.

Our longer term plan (which is being actioned now) is to change ISP's and move from a dedicated server to our own server in co-location although there are a couple of hurdles to overcome with that (like our present facility being prepaid until the end of 2008). This server will provide us with improved performance but more importantly the capability to remotely restart it ourself rather than wait for someone at their end to do so.

We apologise for the inconvenience - it is as frustrating for us as it is for you.

Cheers
Russ

Thanks for the info Russ. While I don't and won't pretend to understand the workings of a server setup, it sounds like improvements are in the pipeline. :

Thanks Russ. Sounds to me like the ISP should be changed....and as we all know...A server is only good for about 2yrs before sumin like the Raid Controller, HDD or Mother F....I mean Mother board goes.

I actually thought it was at my end for a bit and bought a new Cisco router....But hey! I needed one anyway..So some good came out of it!

Thanks for the update...appreciate it!!
