Looks like a bitsa. Has AU1 cluster in it. I'd run a magnet along the side to check for bog.

Did the coach built AU coupes have build plates?

Looks way better than the gold one in early AMC mag. But what's the point really. Someone's done a lot of work just to make it harder to get in and out of.

I'm actually quite impressed with this. It looks great. A bit of cosmetic tinkering and it would look amazing with the right mods.

Be interesting to have a look in the back seat and what they've done with the trims. The only thing that really bothers me with it is the windows where the rear doors use to be look too big

I like it, $21k is about right depending on condition Imo. Very awesome AU though, plenty of tlc put into it for sure!

Edit, wish he put a better steering wheel on it before the sale lol.

The core business of Wheels has always been to promote Australian built product. There was a time when Car of the Year was only open to Aussie made.

Someone brought up the AU coupe's a year or two ago, and apparently a third party company could still be contracted to build them? but don't quote me...

I like it. It'd look nicer with a DJR type rear spoiler.
Looks much nicer than the original 300+ AU Coupe of 2001

Hillier Brothers did the original AU 2 doors, including the 300+ coupe. I'd say this was also one of theirs. Very well engineered, iirc it was around $35,000 for the conversion back in 2000-2002.

If my lotto numbers come up I'd buy it & build a 2 door T3.

One of them was for sale in Perth early to mid last year. They wanted 100k+ for it.

I'm thinking about this one. I love coupes.

I'd do similar to you, but base the looks on a 220 Rebel, with a T3 style engine and a few more ponies, maybe 450 or so.

doesn't look to bad. I prefer the 300+ coupe but this is a lot cheaper option, plus being fully engineered. it would be a great buy

Bottledup is correct Hillier brothers did the original coupe conversions , but one of thier workers at the time had a go at doing his own au xr8 into to coupe can't remember all the details but do remember it was red , so maybe this is that car . Was featured in street machine mag back in the day ( 2000 something ) . The 300+ coupe that was advertised here in perth in 2015 was owned by ROY LANE of LANE FORD , he also had another one as well think it was black in colour .

I had a copy of that street machine back in the day and from memory the first one was a forte with an xr6 bodykit and wheels in the greeny colour. Thinking back it was along the lines of 35k, and you supply the donor car

It's an utterly superb job.

I looked at it last weekend, and put down a deposit.
Picked it up on Thursday.

The guy did the conversion last year, and he's a spray painter by trade, though an excavator driver now.

He did the cutting, welding, and back to bare metal spray job.
It's a 10-15k paint job on it's own.
The conversion would have to be worth 20k.

There's little clues to show that it was once a 4 door car.
I've only found tiny things, like barely visible joins in some door rubbers.
A small lump/indent under the rooflining where the pillar used to be.

The exterior finish is stunning.

The doors have been extended 200mm, using 2004 Monaro glass.
The side rear glass is Mondeo.

I only bought it because it's such a good job.

The dude is a craftsman.

The rest of the car is essentially stock, for now...

Oh, I paid $15,500.

I think the flatter lower window line looks heaps better then the hillier conversions with the back window that sweeps up. Is there a plan to swap the front end from a bastardised b series xr to an au or a t series?

Yeh I think it's nicer than the Hillier version too.

My aim is to make it like an XR8 rebel.
Already have side skirts, rear bar, and wing.
Just need a good front bar.

Swap the bar off the nice blue xr and paint it red... joking.. if the planets align and a t series front package become available for Pocket change the thing will be next level
