Ok best way is probably with the prooer tool of course. But I don't have one and I can't budge the black outer ring which I'm assuming unscrews to remove the fuel pump assembly.

As future reference for any searches that lead here, a good DIY tutorial can be found here, including an effective way to remove that stubborn locking ring (8th picture down).
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11284629 The fuel line disconnects are fiddly, but taking your time to poke around ad figure out which tabs to pry on while pulling where helps. :-)
