Default New AU11 SR Falcon

Hi all, I have just ended up with an 2001 SR AU11 Faclon 100,000k's. Due to cash problems I had to get rid of my new XR5T. Very sad day. So I have joined this forum, moving over from fordxr5turbo.com (great bunch of guys).

I have a few questions. I live in Lithgow as the name suggests. Any suggestions as to what to do to the suspension and brakes to make it handle better on the twisty stuff. I don't want to turn it into a teeth rattler but something that will give me a bit more confidence driving up and down the bells line of road. Cash is going to be a problem and also my relative lack of mechanical nouse - but I would appreciate any suggestions you can make.

Also I imagine getting a K&N air filter would be good (read somewhere here about replacing the oxygen sensor - good idea?)

Any other not to expensive ideas would be appreciated.

1 other thing. The car doesn't have cruise control. I thought all SR's had it, am I wrong?

Welcome to auforums mate!!!

Most people on this forum agree that a new snorkel/CAI + new K&N High Flow Air FIlter, plus replacing the oxygen senser is a good idea. Not bad for about $250ish anyway.

The rest i cant help you with...

A new snorkel/CAI. Is this a factory part from another model or aftermarket (brand?). Sorry very new to all this.

The one that come on your car is small'ish. You can now go to Ford and buy a BA Snorkel for about $40ish. This new one has a bigger opening that the standard one. You Ba one is the same size, without the wings picture on it.

This has a bigger opening to allow more cold air into the filter box, and with a higher flowing filter will let more cold air into your car. You should see slightly more throttle response.

Im also newish to here, and i will give you one BIG piece of advice. The search field at the top will be you BEST friend. Most questions you want to ask, have been asked 50 times already.

And we would love to see some pics !!!!!

Suspension wise I have found the Pedders lowered springs and Sports Ryder shocks to be the best on rougher roads ... I know what Bells Line cane be like as I live at Kurrajong. I have only lowered mine 1.5" all round with gas shock as nthis has made a marked difference in handling without going too rigid with suspension travel.

A lot of people do not like the Pedders items ... but after 60,000km worth of hard city and rough country road driving I have found control to be excellent along with a fairly comfortable ride ... it is harsher than standard (but nothing like my old Proton with harsh KYB shocks ... which were great on smooth sealed road ... but country road was too harsh).

Mine is a ute though with leaf springs in the rear as well ... which will be more of a harsher ride than coil springs all-round too.

For brakes, I went for DBA slotteds and Bendix Ultimate pads. For suspension, I am going for Kings spring SL, or SSL and shortened struts and shocks, although I am not expecting a nice ride.

for the intake, a BA XR6T snorkel, with a high flow filter = good.

a 2.5" cat back exhaust (mandrel bent) aint a bad idea either

and what they said about suspension.

yeh for suspension just chuck some pedders sports rider lowered springs in, i have them in my au and it handles bloodly awsome, alot better than dads ba xr6. Expect to pay around $175 a pair for these springs

The XR6T snorkel is indeed what you need, plus the K&N panel filter.

Pacemaker extractors and the 2.5 cat back exhaust will all be very good additions also.

Pedder's shocks have worked for me, and I added XR6 springs to firm up and lower my ride.

To help the car corner better, lowering will do, but if you don't want to lower it, firm up the anti-roll bars. Do this by either replacing the bar with a larger size aftermarket one, or add nolathane bushes at the link and chassis mount points. Nolathane is similar to upgradin the bar by 2mm, and on a 27mm bar, 2mm difference increases bar stiffness by around 40%. Bushes are also the cheapest and easiest mod to do to get the car handlig better.

Please suggest $. I have put in my guesses. Also if you have an idea as to fitting costs etc.

I would love to put on extractors and exhaust but I think it will be to expensive at the moment. I heard that extractors improve fuel economy, is this correct?

XR6T Snorkle- $40- Do it yourself its too easy
K & N Filter- $120/130- As above
Oxy Sensor- NFI??
Lowered Springs Kings/Lovells/Whatever- $150 a pair and then about another $150 for fitting
DBA Rotors- $120 a pair or so- Install them yourself
Bendix Advanced Pads- Around $70 a pair- Install them yourself
New Shock/Struts- Prices vary depending on brand/quality

Exhaust is probably your cheapest bang for your buck mod after Snorkle/KN Filter and then maybe think about extractors

*You might also want to check out the Project cars section, a lot of the guys here have done a lot of the mods you have mentioned and have left stack of info

Gotta say though I'm mostly after corner for my buck than bang for my buck. After coming from the XR5T and driving bells line most days I really need it to stick.

One other thing. I need to upgrade the headlights something rotten. High beams ok but lows are NOT GOOD.

Was looking on ebay for an oxygen sensor and found these tails lights.

Which do you think would be better on a white car. Black $130 Chrome $170.

Anyone had any experience with lights like these? Are these to much $ or crap quality???

Well 3 of my clients shut down owing me over 50K in total. So most of the cash from selling the XR5T is going to mister taxman.

are you sure they are aimed correctly?

AU low beams are some of the best standard headlights in terms of output. aside from cars with projectors/HID's.

Got oxygen sensor, K&N, Snorkel.

Going to go into a brake/suspension shop here in Lithgow to talk suspension. Looking at Whiteline sway bars 27 or 30 on the front and 22 on the rear. Also going to talk to them re lowering it. What do you guys think 27 or 30 on the front?

At the moment thinking

Sway bars - Whiteline 27 and 30
Springs - ?
Shocks - ?
Rotors - ?
Pads - ?

Anything else I should be looking at suspension wise - bushes etc???

Whiteline products are great for excellent handling ... especially when setup well.
Only thing I found with it was it was quite harsh ride-wise (first hand experience with my Mum's FK Laser GHIA manual ... she has The Works kits installed on it).

handled like it was on rails ... but was quite harsh on some roads.
