Hey people...

Which other companies besides Bigpond offer a wireless broadband service? Looking at getting it hooked up in the next week.

None that have the same coverage as Bigpond. You'll probably find that other companies are only limited to certain places within capital cities.

Why wireless? Is ADSL not suitable for your needs? Or is it for travelling?

It is, I'm trying to get away from having to pay line rental on a phone which I'll never use. That's why I got my mobile plan from Vodafone...

Wireless will end up costing you more then what the most basic line rental and DSL plan will cost...

Might be cheaper to go on the Telstra Homeline Buget plan ($19.95/month) for your line rental and then go and get ADSL with someone else.

Personally, I pay $19.95/month for line rental, $49.95 for ADSL (1500 speed, 10Gb) and about $5 for phone calls (VoIP).

I use iBurst via BigAir.

Its not my main connection I have ADSL at home.

The coverage isnt as good as Next G but it is also no where near as expensive either.

I pay $52 a month for 500mb peak and 1000mb off peak. It works every place I want it to work.

According to the ranting folk at Whirlpool, in the last few days Telstra have made some 'Terms and Conditions' changes to the Budget Homleline package that'll affect new customers desiring non Bigpond DSL, best check up on that.

Three are supposed to be offering HSDPA wireless soon that will supposedly be priced the same as DSL, but they don't have the best coverage, my 3 mobile barely gets signal and I'm in the middle of metro south Adelaide.

EDIT - $99.95 a month for 1GB download doesn't sit right with me. At the moment it looks like I'll be doing a line rental setup...

Only for people not on Telstra Wholesale hardware. That means it generally only affects people who are on Non-Telstra ADSL2+ hardware.

Wireless is crap.. nothing more to it.. Between slow speeds, drop outs, cost etc etc etc.

Go the Homeline Budget (unless your wanting DSL2+ since Telstra won't allow that combo anymore) + DSL with someone other than Telstra...

You are in mid sunny coast, somewhere near Maroochydore or so.
Your choices are:
HSDPA on NextG either Bigpond or Telstra Mobile at 11Mb/s although the quickest approved modems at this time are 3.6Mb/s
Optus or Voda GPRS at about 500Kb/s if you are down the front. If you are behind Buderim or up near Madjimba you are stuffed.
The odd wifi backyarder that appear and disappear every week or so.

So basicly if you do not want Bigpond you are buggered.... sorry

When did Telstra change this?

Any of Big Pond's ADSL/2/2+ plans can be had on the cheap line rental. The only change I last heard of was charging a higher rate to competitors for providing ADSL on the same cheap phone plan.

I had iBurst through Chilli (wireless, still have the modem if you want it). Now have ADSL2+ through TPG. Went from $25.95 for 200mb to $29.95 for 600mb per month. Don't download much so it's perfect, heaps quick too.

What about Telstra cable? is this in your area? if so, you dont need a phone line.

there are 3 or 4 providers giving wireless houshold internet without a phone line

its run on 10 gig and is transmitted from mountains around the coast , u do need line of site though

I have wireless. It is crap. Only have it because the house I'm in has no phone line (don't ask, I don't know why)

Compared to what you pay, you get peanuts compared to wired connections.

i just signed up to bigpond wireless and am quite pleased with it, where i am i certainly can't get adsl (even though the main communications cables run past my house about 200m away). and yes it is a bit pricey but after god knows how many years i've been stuck on super slow dialup up, it feels like its as quick as lightning.

Wireless is a valid choice IF you cannot get normal ADSL ie. Pair gained lines, too far from exchange etc.

Only in the last couple weeks.. If your on Telstra DSL2 then you can get the cheap one still. It's only if your on someone else's DSL2+

Cost about $170 to set up. My laptop has built in wireless and the kit came with a remote antenna for he desktop.

I have a wireless network and ethernet hub with voip telephone.

No mess, no fuss, and same speed?

$34 a month, unlimited, wireless at 256kbps, in a area that cant get ADSL, i reckon its great, can go to 512 for 52 a month.

This type of wireless is fine..

The Wireless internet that is talked about here is to do with internet that is sent to the home wirelessly from the ISP ie NextG or similar.

Telstra changed it because the Homeline Budget was designed for pensioners and people who have a hard time affording a phone. Telstra run at a loss with this plan, so it was decieded to make customers with wholesale ADSL (other carrier) take up Homeline Complete, in which they gain a small return for the line.

That excuse is total BS from telstra... There is a different plan designed for pensioners....
